I will add, I may not be the best person to lead the group because I am not an Earth Scientist (i.e. I will happily defer if someone else steps forward). Also, I was unable to attend the January meeting, so I am not up to date with the latest happenings. Having said that, I am very interested in seeing this topic advance, so I am happy to do the grunt work that will enable everyone to keep talking!

Dear Fellow Research Artifact Citation Cluster Members,
At the end of last year, we briefly discussed either putting this group on hold (at least with respect to having monthly meetings) or potentially taking on a targeted effort to increase earth science researcher awareness of credit considerations for data. I did hear back from a handful of folks who were interested in pursuing this targeted effort; however, I have had a few additional responsibilities added to my plate and it will be challenging for me to continue to lead this cluster.
Are there any members that are interested in stepping into a leadership role for this cluster? New leaders can feel free to continue pursuing my original idea below or take the cluster in a new direction!
If no one is interested, I will work with Megan Carter to put this group into hiatus until someone has the time and desire to start up a new conversation. In the meantime, we will continue to maintain the listserv for sharing interesting citation-related information. Just chiming in here to say that I think what Madison proposed looks like a great area of focus for the time-being. I do think it's important to zero in on specific areas, like data, in part to identify a specific activity to potentially take on. We don't have to forget about other artifacts. Of course, you can always move on to others or pan back out to focusing on several at a later time. Clusters are not meant to be all things to all people, but instead work on addressing a specific need before moving on to the next need or going on hiatus. With good communication, you can keep the whole mailing list informed and people can show up when it is most useful for them.

Thanks for the questions, Lesley! As we have been discussing in the group lately, it is challenging to develop blanket guidance/resources for all research artifacts. I would like to start with a focus on data and we can see if what we generate for data can be applied more broadly to other research artifacts. If not, we could tackle another artifact after working on data if people think that would be worthwhile.
I am not planning to do anything formal at the ESIP winter meeting; however, if there will be opportunities for birds of a feather discussions, it would be fun to start chatting about this during the winter meeting.

Hi Fellow Cluster Members,
During our cluster meeting last month, cluster members determined that it might be time for the Research Artifact Citation Cluster to take a break. There are still challenges in the area of credit for research artifacts, but we were not able to come up with a clear direction to move the group. Following that discussion, I attended a Science Gateways Community Institute training that was hosted by ESIP to help cluster leads to develop value propositions and goals for their cluster. As I brainstormed with other cluster leads, I had an idea of a goal/direction that we could potentially head, if others are interested:
Goal: Increase earth science researcher awareness of credit considerations for data
Activity: Create bite-sized pieces of information (think infographics) that cluster members, data managers, librarians, repository managers, etc., could use to engage early career researchers in conversations about credit for data.
If this sounds like something that you would be interested in pursuing with me, please let me know by responding to this email!
If there is enough interest, I would like to meet again in February 2023 to discuss the idea in more detail and formulate a plan. This break will give us some time to focus on activities at the AGU Fall Meeting and ESIP Winter Meeting and come back reinvigorated in the new year. I will try to put together a Doodle poll for anyone who responds to find a common meeting time that will work for the most participants.
In the meantime, let's continue using the listserv to share resources and questions related to citation and credit!
