Hello from Vancouver

On the utility of identification schemes for digital earth science data: An assessment and recommendations.

Earth Science Informatics, 4(3), 139-160. doi:10.1007/s12145-011-0083-6

has been cited 51 times in Scopus and 25 times in the Web of Science.

I am very interested in this upcoming meeting. I market a dataset tracking service to researchers in the earth sciences here at UBC. I use a lot of techniques found in

https://www.gbif.org/literature-tracking

So far the level of interest has been underwhelming to say the least. Do some researchers view journal articles as proxies for their datasets? Any insights or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good Easter.

Back to lurking.

I’d just like to remind everyone on work done by ESIP on this topic a decade ago. See the open access article at https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12145-011-0083-6

Good Afternoon, ESIP Research Artifact Citation Cluster,

This is a friendly reminder that our monthly meeting is scheduled for next week (April 13) at 4:00 ET. As the new shepherd of the group, I would like to suggest that we focus (for a while) on Persistent identifier systems as they will be an important concept in Artifact Citation going forward. I will bring what I have learned and hope to hear what you have learned and what you think still needs to be considered so that every research artifact can be properly cited!

Please use the link below.

I look forward to chatting!

Diana,

Does the LC Standard Identifiers vocabulary draw from the identifiers.org<http://identifiers.org> resolution service? We find their registry to be quite comprehensive and a machine readable source for our federated data systems, and it is continuously updated as new RRIDs and other identifier types get created. Here's the registry of identifier types: https://registry.identifiers.org/registry The science-on-schema.org<http://science-on-schema.org> group decided to recommend the use of the identifiers.org<http://identifiers.org> vocabulary as the source for standard URLs for identifier schemes: https://github.com/ESIPFed/science-on-schema.org/blob/master/guides/Dataset.md#identifier

I'd be interested in the ESIP session as well.

Matt

Thanks Diana, I would be happy to have you involved as we put together our session. It probably won't be until later in April, but I can loop you in as we get some ideas together,

Matthew,

I would be very interested in working together on a session for the Summer ESIP meeting. Please let me know how I can help!

Recently, I have been focusing on persistent identifier systems. There are many. The Library of Congress maintains a list Standard Identifiers - LC Linked Data Service: Authorities and Vocabularies | Library of Congress (loc.gov)<https://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/identifiers.html>. It was last updated in 2020 and does not contain all of the systems relevant to science. I was thinking of suggesting a review of these systems a the upcoming meeting of the Research Artifact Citation group. It would be useful to identify where there is duplication and where there are holes.

Dan, As a technologist, I understand the difficulty of developing a persistent identifier system for software. I need to catch up on the resources you shared. Thank you for providing them!

Best
Diana

The Linked Data Service provides access to commonly found standards and vocabularies promulgated by the Library of Congress. This includes data values and the controlled vocabularies that house them. Datasets available include LCSH, BIBFRAME, LC Name Authorities, LC Classification, MARC codes, PREMIS vocabularies, ISO language codes, and more.

Hi Diana, all,
I am co-PI of a recent NSF Research Coordination Network (RCN) grant focused on PIDs for facilities and instruments. We are still in early phases, but are planning to dig into the benefits and drawbacks of using RRIDs vs DOIs for instruments and facilities. Anita B. is on our project's advisory group. We were already planning to organize a session on this topic for the summer ESIP meeting, so if others are interested, I'd be happy to talk more and work together on a session.

Here is our project web site: https://ncar.github.io/FAIR-Facilities-Instruments/

Matt

I've had lots of discussions with Anita B. (from SciCrunch<https://www.scicrunch.com>, which manages RRIDs) about them. We've had fairly strong disagreements about the role of RRIDs for software, but mostly come to the agreement that they are ok to use for software packages (not versions but overall concepts - all versions) in the life sciences.

Other disciplines have other PIDs that they use for software, which is confusing and difficult.

This is unlike data, where DOIs have become standard.

For more on repository and registry practices related to software, see https://scicodes.net/ and https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.13117

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if this group has ever discussed RRIDs? In my brief review, the system appears to target the life sciences, but may be able to address the repository question that we have discussed(?)

EXERPT:
RIDs are not for citing ideas or data since well-developed cita tion systems already exist for that. Instead, RRID numbers are created by repositories that distribute the research resource, such as Addgene for plasmids, or the National Xenopus Resource for transgenic frogs.
