[Esip-documentation] on documenting instrument and platform metadata

I've approached CF with several instrument-related questions, and I think
this kind of provenance info is way outside their area of interest. You know
how modelers are ...

The way an ADCP (e.g.) is set up and deployed is critical for understanding
how you can use the resulting data. Since that info needs to be
recorded, it seems
reasonable that there should be a discussion leading to some guidelines
on how
to encode it, if only so others will know where to look.

That doesn't mean that the ACDD group, or the CF folks, need to tackle
this, just
that someone, somewhere, should. Personally, I'd like to see ACDD
stripped down
to attributes that would be classified primarily as 'discovery' - the
most contentious
fields would then be removed, and I could start using it again.

Actually, IMHO, the nice thing about standards is that if they don't
interest you, you
don't need to bother with them.
