Hello ESIP Preservationists,

The IT and Interoperability Cluster had a nice Webinar today on provenance. Beth Plale gave a good talk on work she and others are doing to capture provenance of AMSR-E processing. Afterwards there was discussion of some of the issues around provenance capture and representation. Some of the issues were how to ensure the use of consistent vocabularies across different provenance schemes, the extensibility of the relationships in OPM, how best to present provenance information to the user, etc. A core theme was ensuring scientific reproducibility. Sound familiar?

Anyway the group was very interested in what our cluster, esp. Bruce and Kurt, have been up to on this topic. They agreed that they didn't want to go off and redo anything we were doing, and didn't necessarily see a need to start a new cluster if they can participate in our provenance working group. Maybe the scope of the working group needs to be expanded. I invited them to participate in our next telecon and said that we would include provenance collaboration on the agenda. The group at the webinar included several people working on NASA ACCESS provenance grants, and they definitely should be involved.

I copy Rahul Ramachandran the IT and Interoperability chair here. He can spread the word, but Ruth when you send out the next meeting announcement you may want to include the IT group in the distribution.

Finally, we also talked briefly of having another provenance focus at the winter meeting. It may be time to do it again, given there will be new work done under the ACCESS grants.

Cheers,

-m.
