Hi folks,

Following up on our discussion today, I heard back from Ramona Walls about
recommendations regarding whom we might invite from the TDWG (Biodiversity
Information Standards) Community for the Semantic Harmonization "Digital
Knowledge Commons" effort.

The idea was for one of their developers to learn more about the Semantic
activities underway at ESIP, as TDWG has long (for too long) been on the
threshold of converting their DarwinCore "standard" (
https://www.gbif.org/darwin-core) to something more semantic.

However, I think if we do invite someone, they should not just be a
participant, but invited to present on their semantic vocabulary approaches
(i.e. 5 mins?).
Something like:

-----
Hi,
We are convening a session at the upcoming virtual ESIP meetings (July
14-24) on "Building a Digital Knowledge Commons", that will be discussing
ways in which we can improve on the interoperability and sustainability of
semantic controlled vocabulary efforts underway in the earth and
environmental sciences. Your involvement with building vocabularies on
behalf of the Biodiversity community is highly relevant in connecting
scientific observations of the physical environment with the biological
environment.

Apologies for this late notice, but we would like to invite you to give a
brief presentation (5 minutes) of your relevant work at our session, which
runs on Wed, Jul 22 from 08:30-10:00PDT. Ideally this would focus on
Darwin Core, and its latest extensions. The normal $200 registration for
attendance would be waived of course, and you would be welcome to attend
any other sessions that might be of interest, including a number that are
addressing the challenges and rewards of building semantic vocabularies.
----

What do you think? I think it would be great to get the Biodiversity
community on-board-- they think a LOT about specimens (e.g. in museums),
but also any physical samples with biological content, PLUS they are slowly
moving into "occurrences"-- that is, observations of biodiversity in nature
("partridge in a pear tree").

Based on Ramona's suggestions, and my familiarity with several of the
possibilities, I think we should directly invite John Deck, and ask him to
recommend a second if he cannot make it...

Thanks for quick feedback on this plan: Yes or No

cheers,
Mark
