                                                                Senior Computing and Operations Analyst


The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) operates several observatory centers (including the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory (NSO), Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Gemini Observatory) in the United States and Chile under cooperative agreements with the National Science Foundation.
The National Solar Observatory (NSO) is seeking a Senior Computing and Operations Analyst for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) Data Center (DC).
The Senior Computing and Operations Analyst will utilize broad expertise in computing, operations, and business analysis to assure operational, scientific data management, and curation architectures for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) Data Center (DC). S/he will contribute systems analysis and prototyping of software toolkits managing the DKIST Proposal and Experiment lifecycles, data processing pipelines and scientific data management. In addition, s/he will assess and prototype the applicability of current and future computing technologies to the DKIST. The position is based in Boulder, Colorado, with occasional travel to Tucson, Arizona and Maui, Hawaii.
Essential Functions:

  *   Capture and analyze business, functional and technical requirements, assure traceability to scientific and internal requirements, and lead and participate in formal conceptual, technical, and acceptance reviews
  *   Contribute to DKIST DC system design and architecture and systems verification planning
  *   Assure coherence of business and functional requirements to developing and adopted system technologies
  *   Identify and prototype appropriate storage software and hardware technologies, demonstrating feasibility of end-to-end architecture
  *   Identify and develop DC performance metrics (e.g., operational uptime and quality) assessment and assurance
  *   Contribute to modeling and analytics of DKIST scientific, calibration, and engineering data and metadata
  *   Ensure adherence to applicable software industry and astronomy community standards and best practices, and remain current with emerging technologies

Requirements


  *   Bachelor's degree in Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Engineering, Systems Engineering, or other technical disciplines
  *   At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in software and hardware systems analysis, requirements generation and management, with at least five years in a senior role
  *   Extensive, demonstrable experience in business analysis or systems engineering
  *   Demonstrable experience in software engineering methodologies
  *   Demonstrable experience designing and scoping high-performance, redundant, distributed data storage systems
  *   Experience working in scientific or technical (e.g. engineering) organizations, and/or have been involved with developing system architecture serving such organizations.
  *   Experience with common programming languages (Java, C/C++, Python, Ruby, etc.)
  *   Understanding of relational and non-relational databases
  *   Understanding, or ability to understand, astronomical observing techniques and procedures
  *   Ability to speak and write effectively in English, including preparation of comprehensive technical reports
  *   Occasional travel (<10%) expected
Desirable Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  *   Master's degree or higher in Physics/Astronomy, Engineering/Systems Engineering
  *   Experience within Agile/Scrum environments
  *   Experience with metadata identification, characterization, and management
  *   Experience with enterprise data modeling
