Hi,
ESDIS is looking for two additional part-time participants for the ESDIS
Standards Office (ESO). ESO is charged with assisting the ESDIS Project to
identify and review emerging best practices and standards of particular
value to the NASA Earth science data systems community. Traditionally,
these individuals come from the DAACs, but we realize that the SIPS may
also have personnel that want to have a broader role in Standards for Earth
Science. The ESO takes a pragmatic approach and favors working standards
and practices that have been shown to work in the NASA environment, while
tracking emerging information system technologies.
The job is part-time, at 0.25 FTE, and requires working with a team
distributed across the US. Meetings are currently conducted via telecon
every 2-3 weeks, but are likely to be more frequent with ESO’s new, more
active role in initiatives such as Earthdata Cloud Analytics. Typically,
ESO members meet in-person once a year at the ESDSWG meeting. Editing and
writing assignments are made at the telecons and meetings. ESO staff
members are expected to fully participate in standards activities
including: writing standards specifications, promulgating standards,
presenting at meetings on standards, conducting research and trade studies
on standards, and assisting DAACs, data providers, and others with
understanding and implementing standards. The ESDIS Project will provide
resources to cover the costs of the individual’s participation in ESO at
0.25 WYE plus travel. And this person should be currently working at one
of the SIPS that ESDIS funds.
Valuable skills for new ESO staff include the following:
*data systems technical knowledge
*general knowledge of Earth Science data systems standards
*CMR metadata knowledge
*ISO 19115 knowledge
*data formats/data interoperability
*data user perspective
*good editing and writing skills
SIPS Managers are asked to submit candidates to Jeanne Behnke at ESDIS
along with a paragraph description of qualifications and a cost estimate
for participation by January 24. If you just want to talk about
ideas/options, please contact Jeanne, John or Evelyn.
