Many members of the ESIP Federation may be interested in proposal
opportunities in the NOAA Science Data Stewardship
program, which is intended to provide high quality Climate
Data Records (CDRs) for data from the atmosphere, oceans,
and land surface, where the data are identified as essential
climate variables within the Global Climate Observing System.
The SDS program is intended to produce CDRs routinely
on an operational basis, with an initial emphasis on the use
of satellite observations that can demonstrate high levels of
maturity in scientific and preservation attributes as well as
high societal benefit.

The Federal register notice of May 2 (Volume 71, No. 84,
pp. 25814-25816) identifies several web sites that offer
information. One way to obtain more information is to go to

http://www.climate.noaa.gov/cpo_pa/

In the taskbar under the page's title, activate the pull-down
menu for Opportunities and select the menu for Grants.
When you select Grants, you are likely to first have a page
with just the pull-down menu. Click the tab for Grants
on this seemingly empty page.

You should get a page with a list of proposal opportunities including

2038591 Scientific Data Stewardship (SDS)

content we are looking for.

The key dates are:

Letter of Intent Due Date: May 30, 2006. by 5 p.m. eastern time.
Application Due Date: July 25, 2006 by 5 p.m. eastern time.
Anticipated Award Date: May 1, 2007 (FOR GRANTS, Internal Gov't awards
should be sooner)

On a more personal note, I moved from NASA Langley
in mid-March and am now working at NCDC in Asheville, NC,
as program manager for the SDS program, with an e-mail
address of bruce.barkstrom at noaa.gov
