Applications Programmer

 
Required is an expert-level applications programmer. The contractor
shall develop, implement, and maintain software
applications/documentation that facilitate database development and
climate research.  Programming by the contractor shall involve
decision-making based upon sound meteorological and climatological
principles. The contractor shall perform programming tasks that support:
*      Maintenance and revision of research-quality datasets
*      Creation of new baseline datasets, particularly those focusing on
future climate reanalysis activities 
*      Analyses of climate variability and change that are sponsored by
federal agencies or that are required for international climate
assessments
*      Development of other high-priority NOAA products and services,
such as the U.S. Climate Normals and gridded climate datasets for the
United States and the globe.
 
Qualifications
*      A Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in atmospheric science,
climatology, geography, or computer science.
*      At least 3 years of experience in the following:
o       Developing, implementing, and maintaining operational software
applications written in Fortran 90/95;
o       Programming in a Unix environment, including a proficiency in
writing scripts (e.g., in Perl or the Bourne shell) to automate routine
tasks;
o       Creating and updating online documentation of operational
software applications; and
o       Managing large collections of instrumental climate data and/or
climate model output.
*      At least 1 year of experience is preferred in the following:
o       Data storage/management systems (e.g., netCDF, HDF, RDBMS);
o       GMT (e.g., to create maps or other visual representations of
data);
o       Python (e.g., for applications programming or software
prototyping);
o       Version-control systems (e.g., CVS, Subversion);
o       Web development (HTML/XHTML, CSS, PHP); and
o       XML-based or other dynamic storage, rendering, and delivery
systems.
*      Ability to communicate well in English, to work well with others,
and to train colleagues in new technologies; attention to detail is also
critical.
