Operational Environmental Modeler

Baron Services (http://www.baronservices.com) is looking for an experienced
operational NWP and environmental modeler to support routine real-time
customized environmental modeling at its home office in Huntsville, Alabama,
with an initial training phase at the BAMS offices in Raleigh, North
Carolina. The position is expected to be permanent with opportunity for
professional growth and career development.

Major Duties

The successful candidate will be initially responsible for developing the
knowledge-base sufficient to assume a significant role in managing
day-to-day, routine, customized NWP, air quality, and hydrological
operational model execution and product delivery in a 24/7 mission-critical
environment. The operational modeling systems include a broad range of
applications, from customized-science versions of MM5 and WRF for NWP, to
advanced custom (MAQSIP-RT) and public (CMAQ) operational air quality
models, to three different but sophisticated hydrological modeling systems
(NWSRFS, TOPLATS-SMPV, LN-2). All of these applications include a
wide-variety of space and time scales tailored to meet the specific and
unique requirements of a very diverse customer base, including local and
national broadcast television, state- and federal-agencies, consumer
road-condition prediction, emergency management, and the aircraft and marine
transportation sectors. After an initial training phase, the candidate will
assume an increasingly independent role in day-to-day operational
applications including input data QA/QC, model deployment for new
applications, routine operational management and oversight, error-recovery,
post-processing, product-delivery, and results-evaluation. The evaluation
component of the position will allow for first-hand objective analysis of
performance envisioned to feed directly back into further model
improvements. The candidate will also be expected to implement modeling
solutions developed by the senior modeling team within our rapid-prototyping
and research-to-applications environment.

Qualifications

The basic requirement is an M.S. degree in Meteorology or Hydro-meteorology
with 3+ years experience in operational environmental modeling.

Selective Factors: The successful candidate will have: (1) experience in at
least one of two key modeling areas: (a) NWP modeling including MM5 and/or
WRF; (b) hydrological or hydro-meteorological modeling using one or more
widely accepted rainfall-runoff models such as the NWSRFS (SAC-SMA) and/or
an energy-balance model such as NOAH; (2) proven ability in Fortran 90/95
within a Linux-operating-system environment including an understanding of
OpenMP and MPI parallel-programming environments, (3) familiarity with
and/or willingness to learn (and follow coding standards inherent to) the
EPA Models-3 I/O API applications programming interface; (4) a basic
understanding of both the csh- and perl-based scripting environments; (5)
some familiarity with chemistry-transport models, including ozone and PM2.5;
(6) some familiarity with writing or developing automated quality control
checks and reports for model input and output data, and (6) ability to
effectively communicate

orally and in writing in English; and (7) a keen desire to grow within an
emerging commercial meteorological advanced systems company.

Benefits: A comprehensive benefits package is available. Benefits include
paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance with cafeteria plan, dental
insurance, life insurance, 401(k), and short-term and long-term disability
insurance.

Application Process: To be considered for this position, please send your
cover letter, resume and salary requirements to:
employment at baronservices.com. Be sure to include the reference of OEM on all
application materials in order to help ensure prompt and efficient handling.
No telephone calls please.
