Dear Colleagues,

We would like to call your attention to the session titled "IN004: Advanced
Methods for Pattern Recognition" at the forthcoming American Geophysical
Union (AGU) Annual Meeting, 3-7 December 2012, in San Francisco.

Session description:
Commonly used tools for pattern recognition in geosciences such as
empirical orthogonal functions (EOF) and singular value decomposition (SVD)
contain artificial constraints such as orthogonality, linearity, and
regional dependency. Improving existing tools, developing new methods, and
applying these improved pattern recognition techniques are the foci of this
session. Contributions may include the use of Markov random fields (MRF)
and Bayesian networks.

Conveners:
Stefan Liess, University of Minnesota, liess at umn.edu
Snigdhansu Chatterjee, University of Minnesota, chatterjee at stat.umn.edu
Fred Semazzi, North Carolina State University, semazzi at ncsu.edu
Karsten Steinhaeuser, University of Minnesota, ksteinha at umn.edu

Co-Sponsors:
Atmospheric Sciences (AS)
Biogeosciences (B)
Global Environmental Change (GC)
Nonlinear Geophysics (NG)
Ocean Sciences (OS)

Please feel free to distribute this announcement among interested
colleagues. The deadline for abstract submission is 23:59 (EDT) on 8 August
2012. Please submit abstracts (max. 250 words) at <
