Science Data Systems Engineer

Job Description & Responsibilities:
Within the Goddard Earth Sciences (GES) Data and Information Services Center (DISC), the selectee for this position will be responsible for planning, execution, and management of specific projects to facilitate the usage and usability of Atmospheric Composition data.  This includes leading the Atmospheric Composition Portal (ACP) project, attending and contributing to international ACP meetings, supporting the GES DISC atmospheric composition data management team, and guiding evolutionary directions to enhance distributed multi-atmospheric composition data access.  The selectee will perform R&D, and facilitate implementation, to enable the advancement of data interoperability across data centers and datasets, and support (enhance) the full data life-cycle process.  The incumbent will attend the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Working Group on Information Systems and Services (WGISS) and the Working Group on Calibration and Validation (WGCV) meetings.

In addition, the selectee will lead NASA's Earth science data and information quality effort.  This includes participating in international and domestic forums that address data quality, as well as contributing to forward looking methods for supporting data quality assessment and providing users with data specific quality information.  The incumbent will be NASA's lead to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Quality Assurance for Earth Observations (QA4EO) data subgroup.

The selectee is required to have a strong knowledge of, and be ability to effectively discuss, Earth science data management policy, issues, and resolutions with potential national and international partners.  An understanding of the System Engineering aspects of data management is essential.  Engineering efforts include gathering and defining requirements; conducting trade studies; representing the Earth Observing System Data Information System (EOSDIS) at all appropriate NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), and project level System Engineering activities; and supporting system activities that result from relevant external recommendations, project interfaces, and innovative solutions.  In addition, the selectee will be responsible for management of projects involving the use and evaluation of promising advanced technologies, with an eye towards improving data management systems. This work will be performed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.

Additional Qualifications:

 *   Publications in Atmospheric Science or related fields is desirable and should be cited for consideration
 *   Working knowledge of large data systems; Earth science data and information technologies; Research experience in Atmospheric science  and atmospheric science data interoperability.
 *   Past experience in Team Leadership and collaborations on science projects is needed.
 *   Skills in creatively guiding and leading the development of data management systems encompassing heterogeneous datasets.
 *   Must have strong skills in compilation of technical/scientific documents and presentations, as well as strong oral presentation skills.
 *   Domestic and foreign travel will be required.
 *   Must have current Passport.
Education Requirement:
PhD in Atmospheric Science or a related area of research, e.g., Climatology, or Meteorology.

Senior Software Engineer/Web Developer

Job Description & Responsibilities:
The candidate will support the design, development, and planning of NASA's Earth Observing a System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) with particular emphasis on systems that work with NASA's Earth Science data sets. This position will work closely with the Earthdata system with emphasis on the Worldview project and its underlying Global Imagery Browse Services (WMS, WCS, WMTS, WPS).  As a whole, this system provides high throughput access and visualization capabilities to a growing proportion of NASA's Earth science data holdings.  It will play an increasingly critical role in providing full resolution browse capabilities for data discovery, search and order, and support for external agencies.

The candidate should be a self-starter, motivated, able to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a dynamic environment with a good understanding of software development standards and best practices.

Essential qualifications:

 *   Experience designing and developing interactive web applications using modern standards (e.g., JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3) for desktop and mobile solutions
 *   Experience with OpenLayers and/or web services a plus
 *   Experience with Earth science data products and geospatial mapping solutions highly desirable
 *   Understanding of standards as applicable (e.g., OGC, ISO, etc.)

LANCE Systems Architect

Job Description & Responsibilities:
The incumbent shall work at a senior level and provide analysis, Systems Engineering, planning, and architecture support to the Earth Science Data and Information Systems (ESDIS).  Possible specific areas of effort for the incumbent may include: scheduling, analysis, Land Atmosphere Near Real-time (NRT) Capability for EOS (LANCE) science requirements analysis; LANCE scheduling; interaction with LANCE end-users and the identification of end-user requirements; good knowledge of Software life cycle design, and the preparation of Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Operations Agreements, and the generation of proposal material in support of ESDIS.

This position will also work closely with the Worldview project and its underlying Global Imagery Browse Services (Web Mapping Service (WMS), Web Coverage Service (WCS), Web Map Tile Service (WMTS), Web Processing Service (WPS)), providing overall architecture and engineering support as well as some development.  As a whole, this system provides high throughput access and visualization capabilities to a growing proportion of NASA's Earth science data holdings. It will play an increasingly critical role in providing full resolution browse capabilities for data discovery, search and order, and support for external agencies.

The successful candidate will be expected to:  make presentations to user groups; grow the user community; interact with users of NRT data (Government agencies, universities, scientists); develop estimates for generation of new products; should be a self-starter, motivated, able to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a dynamic environment with a good understanding of standards and best practices.

Essential qualifications:

 *   Experience with Earth science data products and geospatial mapping solutions
 *   Demonstrated engineering experience in the areas of analysis, system architecture, and design.
 *   Experience developing standards and procedures, developing new or improving existing system architecture / design, identifying problems and developing solutions, identifying meaningful metrics for performance benchmarking.
 *   Understanding or experience with backend development such as Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS), object-oriented code, SQL, etc.
 *   Understanding of standards as applicable
 *   Ability to gather, define, and document requirements in highly dynamic environments
 *   Ability to effectively schedule and manage interdependent tasks and people
 *   Ability to work effectively in a team environment across Government contracts/contractors

Content Data Systems Engineer

Job Description & Responsibilities:
The candidate will support the design, development, and planning of NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) with particular emphasis on communicating with science users via websites, fostering web community growth and addressing user issues. This position will work closely with the Earthdata project to promote and develop an active, well supported user community by directly interacting with users and developing content for the website.  As a whole, this system provides support and interaction to NASA's Earth science data holdings.

The candidate will be responsible for developing content for the Earthdata site and other online tools.  The candidate will provide support in defining and maintaining the character of the site utilizing his/her experience/understanding of science data. The candidate will seek opportunities to boost the popularity of the Earthdata site and increase user activity.  He/she will work closely with the customer and other supporting contractors and teams to conceive, design, and launch new web products such as blogs, forums, and other tools.  This candidate should have a background with science data and/or journalism/outreach.

The candidate should be a self-starter, motivated, able to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a dynamic environment with a good understanding of science, user support standards and best practices.

Essential qualifications:

 *   Science, technical, and/or outreach background
 *   Experience working with a web content management tool (preferably Drupal) for content creation
 *   Working knowledge/experience with user support systems (such as Kayako, Jira, etc.) is a plus
 *   Demonstrated experience coordinating, scheduling, and tracking web/digital user support standards, procedures, and requests; developing new or improving user support system design, identifying problems and developing solutions; and identifying meaningful metrics for performance benchmarking
