All,

I apologize for not getting this out sooner. This should be a very
exciting presentation.

IT&I Rant and Rave for November 2012

Presented by Reagon Moore, Director of the Data Intensive Cyber
Environments Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Title: Policy-based Data Management

Abstract:
Major science and engineering initiatives are dependent upon massive
data collections that comprise observational, experimental,
simulation, and engineering data. To support collaborations, a policy
driven national data management infrastructure is being implemented
through a bottom-up federation of existing data management systems.
This will enable collaborative research through formation of shared
data collections, and reproducible science through sharing of analysis
workflows. The infrastructure supports all phases of a
community-based collection life cycle, from project collections, to
data grids for sharing data, to digital libraries for publishing data,
to processing pipelines for data analysis, to preservation
environments for reference collections. The DataNet Federation
Consortium is collaborating on extension of the infrastructure to
support GeoScience through the NSF EarthCube Initiative. A discussion
of the types of applications that are enabled will be presented.
