[ESIP-all] Fwd: Request for Information on Development of a National Plan for Civil Earth Observations

Hello ESIPians!

Also, we need a compelling metaphor for why earth observations are of
fundamental importance. The best I have been able to come up with is that
we need to think of our planet as if it is a giant space station (not
original; see for example “Spaceship Earth”). If we were managing a giant
space station, we would take it as a given that we needed robust,
comprehensive, sustained system observations to enable sustainable
management. We are stressing our system by adding more crew, dismantling
life support capacity, and contaminating our atmosphere. If we don’t gather
the system data and then use the data wisely to manage our system, we will
die, or at best our quality of life will be greatly diminished. Somehow, we
need to breathe passion into our quest for earth observations. This stuff
really matters!

Cheers,

Steve Young
