2014 National Climate Assessment
Resources for Educators

The National Climate Assessment offers a wealth of actionable science
about the causes, effects, risks and possible responses to human-caused
climate change. NOAA, USGCRP NCAnet Education Affinity Group and members
of the CLEAN Network have developed a series of guides for educators that
focus on the regional chapters of the Assessment Report, helping to unpack
the key messages of each region and point to related, high-quality online
resources.

The NCA also contains information that will help educators and students
gain a deeper understanding of climate science through the Our Changing
Climate section and Climate Science Supplement. The content in the NCA is
useful and relevant for integration of the Next Generation Science
Standards (NGSS) into science education. In these new standards,
educators are asked to integrate engineering design into the structure of
science education by raising engineering design to the same level as
scientific inquiry when teaching science disciplines at all levels.

For example, throughout the NCA, particularly in the Adaptation and
Infrastructure sections, educators can find information on climate-related
problems and solutions, including those that draw on engineering
design. Finally, the Decision Support Section provides information on how
decision makers across the country are using climate information to
prepare for the impacts of climate change that affect where they work and
live.

Regional Highlights

NCA resources for educators based on each of the U.S. regions, including
coasts and oceans.

The NCA Education Resources for each of the 10 regions in the United
States feature guiding questions, key figures, related resources, reviewed
lesson plans, and videos for all of the NCA's key messages. These sites
contain information thatwill help educators and students gain a deeper
understanding of climate science and help them understand the implications
climate variability and climate change will have on the nation.

Education Resources for the Northeast

"Heat waves, heavy downpours, and sea level rise pose growing challenges
to many aspects of life in the Northeast. Infrastructure, agriculture,
fisheries, and ecosystems will be increasingly compromised. Many states
and cities are beginning to incorporate climate change into their
planning." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Rebuild by Design
Videos from the Rebuild by Design initiative, a post-Hurricane Sandy
competition to connect designers, policy-makers, and communities to come
up with better ways to rebuild and prepare for the effects of climate
change on the East coast.

Education Resources for the Southeast and Caribbean Region

"Sea level rise poses widespread and continuing threats to the region's
economy and environment. Extreme heat will affect health, energy,
agriculture, and more. Decreased water availability will have economic and
environmental impacts." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Climate Change at the Doorstep
This PBS video focuses on sea level rise in Norfolk, Virginia and how the
residents are managing the logistical, financial and political
implications. Science journalists who have been studying Norfolk's rising
sea level problems are interviewed as well are local residents who are
being impacted.

Education Resources for the Midwest

"Extreme heat, heavy downpours, and flooding will affect infrastructure,
health, agriculture, forestry, transportation, air and water quality, and
more. Climate change will also exacerbate a range of risks to the Great
Lakes." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Climate Wisconsin: Extreme Heat
This short video addresses the effects of heat waves on human populations,
with African American residents of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the visual
subjects.

Education Resources for the
Great Plains Region

"Rising temperatures are leading to increased demand for water and energy.
In parts of the region, this will constrain development, stress natural
resources, and increase competition for water. New agricultural practices
will be needed to cope with changing conditions." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Climate Change and Ecosystems
This activity looks at the interdependencies among plants and animals in
an ecosystem and explores how climate change might affect that.

Education Resources for the Southwest

"Increased heat, drought, and insect outbreaks, all linked to climate
change, have increased wildfires. Declining water supplies, reduced
agricultural yields, health impacts in cities due to heat, and flooding
and erosion in coastal areas are additional concerns." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Colorado River Supply
This activity addresses climate change impacts that affect all states that
are part of the Colorado River Basin and are dependent on its water.
Students examine available data, the possible consequences of changes to
various user groups, and suggest solutions to adapt to these changes.

Education Resources for the Northwest

"Changes in the timing of streamflow reduce water supplies for competing
demands. Sea level rise, erosion, inundation, risks to infrastructure, and
increasing ocean acidity pose major threats. Increasing wildfire, insect
outbreaks, and tree diseases are causing widespread tree die-off." NCA,
2014

Highlighted Lesson
Water: A Zero Sum Game
This video takes viewers high into the Rocky Mountain snowpack, where
researchers dig snow pits to explore the source of Colorado's water
supply. This highlights how important snowpack is to the supply of fresh
water available in western and southwestern states.

Education Resources for the
Alaska Region

"Alaska has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the nation, bringing
widespread impacts. Sea ice is rapidly receding and glaciers are
shrinking. Thawing permafrost is leading to more wildfire, and affecting
infrastructure and wildlife habitat. Rising ocean temperatures and
acidification will alter valuable marine fisheries...." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Adapting to Climate Change in Alaska
Alaskans ranging from Unalakleet to Kenai to Ketchikan are witnessing
changes to their environment due to climate change. Erosion, invasive
species, forest fires, flooding, thawing permafrost, melting ice, and
shifting animal habitats are many of the changes taking place. This video
describes steps being taken by some communities to adapt to these changes
and to maintain their lifestyles in the face of climate change.

Education Resources for the Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands Region

"Warmer oceans are leading to increased coral bleaching and disease
outbreaks and changing distribution of tuna fisheries. Freshwater supplies
will become more limited on many islands. Coastal flooding and erosion
will increase. Mounting threats to food and water security,
infrastructure, health, and safety are expected to lead to increasing
human migration." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Tuvalu: Islands on the Frontlines of Climate Change
This narrated slideshow describes the impact of sea level rise on Tuvalu,
one of the low-lying island nations in the South Pacific. As the frequency
and intensity of floods and cyclones increases, the island is shrinking
and saltwater intrusion is affecting local food production on the
plantations.

Education Resources for the Coasts

"Coastal lifelines, such as water and energy infrastructure, and
nationally important assets, such as ports, tourism, and fishing sites,
are increasingly vulnerable to sea level rise, storm surge, erosion,
flooding, and related hazards. Socioeconomic disparities create uneven
vulnerabilities." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Sea-Level Rise Visualization for Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida
This is an interactive map that illustrates the scale of potential
flooding in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida due to projected sea level
rise. It is a collaborative project of NOAA Sea Grant Consortium and
U.S.G.S.

Education Resources for Oceans
and Marine Resources

"Ocean waters are becoming warmer and more acidic, broadly affecting ocean
circulation, chemistry, ecosystems, and marine life. Rising sea surface
temperatures have been linked with increasing levels and ranges of
diseases in people and marine life." NCA, 2014

Highlighted Lesson
Off Base: Acidity of Oceans
This lesson guides a student inquiry into properties of the ocean's
carbonate buffer system, and how changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide
levels may affect ocean pH and biological organisms that depend on
calcification.
