Hello ESIP,

ESIP is happy to announce another Research as Art show at this Summer's meeting in Bloomington<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.esipfed.org_meetings_upcoming-2Dmeetings_esip-2Dsummer-2Dmeeting-2D2017&d=DwIFAg&c=n6-cguzQvX_tUIrZOS_4Og&r=z_UkiNdaPPnn6f_5YCcwk8pcqAmUKyJq-jppGhCSDi8&m=wnuVzWH7MOKpijFibOQHhhmW0QtrJjviYiTd6E4EePU&s=AvovOAhAcWIlesG9Vj3AfEmfx-fh3_9juX7yc8EnUac&e= >. We hope that you take advantage of this opportunity.

This note opens our Call for Submissions. Let me or Bruce Caron know if you have any questions.

Submission Calendar: March 22-June 2, 2017

Introduction

Once again at this year's ESIP Summer Meeting there will be a Research as Art event, taking place the evening of Wednesday, July 26th. The vision is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual (and/or other) media to communicate your data and research, and to think about research as an ongoing interactive narrative. You don't need to consider yourself an artist to submit a piece. The idea is to have a range of entries that show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way.

Submission Criteria and Deadline

Research as Art submissions will be accepted from March 22 through June 2, and must be submitted using the form on the ESIP Website and linked here: Research as Art Submission Form<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.surveygizmo.com_s3_3437142_7c8e0ed07b4f&d=DwIFAg&c=n6-cguzQvX_tUIrZOS_4Og&r=z_UkiNdaPPnn6f_5YCcwk8pcqAmUKyJq-jppGhCSDi8&m=wnuVzWH7MOKpijFibOQHhhmW0QtrJjviYiTd6E4EePU&s=c79G8bWvTiQ4pA65Av8ol-DF0mrFykSO2NJYNEAnuhk&e= >.

NOTE ON SIZE: visuals can be mounted on boards that are 24" by 36" and secured with binder clips. So please (if this works for you) print your work to fit within these limits. Or, you are welcome to display your work on a computer monitor if that better supports the interaction.

Other Sizes, Formats, or Mediums: please let Bruce know what your needs are.

Guidelines

All meeting attendees are welcome to submit one piece of media depicting their work-figures, images, computer models, visualizations, etc.-along with a non-technical caption. Entries can be created specifically for the event or be created for another project, but all should relate to recent or ongoing research and possibly one of ESIP's 2015-2020 strategic goals<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__wiki.esipfed.org_index.php_2015-2D2020-5FStrategic-5FPlan-23Goals-5Fand-5FObjectives&d=DwIFAg&c=n6-cguzQvX_tUIrZOS_4Og&r=z_UkiNdaPPnn6f_5YCcwk8pcqAmUKyJq-jppGhCSDi8&m=wnuVzWH7MOKpijFibOQHhhmW0QtrJjviYiTd6E4EePU&s=qc01IiTSN7hnCXHncNJCnYWrgjJh8wN1NvBaE8NvT2Y&e= >.

These figures will be presented at the Summer Meeting in a gallery-like setting. All figures will be displayed in a gallery on the ESIP website after the event.

There's an abundance of information online about creating scientific figures. The PLOS article Ten Simple Rules for Better Figures<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__journals.plos.org_ploscompbiol_article-3Fid-3D10.1371_journal.pcbi.1003833&d=DwIFAg&c=n6-cguzQvX_tUIrZOS_4Og&r=z_UkiNdaPPnn6f_5YCcwk8pcqAmUKyJq-jppGhCSDi8&m=wnuVzWH7MOKpijFibOQHhhmW0QtrJjviYiTd6E4EePU&s=BMQWXZ4OLSf1uN0CimCPQvA77aSU4IQVY9yn3bH6K7Y&e= > is a useful summary of the main things to consider when creating a figure. Here is the Storify<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__storify.com_roomthily_steam-2Dat-2Desip-2D2016-2Dsummer-2Dmeeting&d=DwIFAg&c=n6-cguzQvX_tUIrZOS_4Og&r=z_UkiNdaPPnn6f_5YCcwk8pcqAmUKyJq-jppGhCSDi8&m=wnuVzWH7MOKpijFibOQHhhmW0QtrJjviYiTd6E4EePU&s=uYH9Y6MFGdMMGdc9o6deLMpVWkDIpiCQmLj08JYwEmk&e= > from last summer's event. The website Visualizing Data<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.visualisingdata.com_&d=DwIFAg&c=n6-cguzQvX_tUIrZOS_4Og&r=z_UkiNdaPPnn6f_5YCcwk8pcqAmUKyJq-jppGhCSDi8&m=wnuVzWH7MOKpijFibOQHhhmW0QtrJjviYiTd6E4EePU&s=LD9RrGS-JENlE21iV8ovOSCqG08ID3qbf-m9xXfcBTA&e= > has other examples of this art.
