PANGAEA Joins as the Latest Member Node in the DataONE Network

PANGAEA is an open access data publisher for Earth & environmental science supporting the long-term archiving and publication of georeferenced data related to environmental sciences. As a DataONE Member Node, PANGAEA makes discoverable metadata for approximately 370,000 data sets comprising more than 12 billion data objects. These include numerical and textual data in addition to image and video data, each as a georeferenced record that contains parameter value, parameter type, and spatial and temporal coverage. In PANGAEA, tens of thousands of different measurement and observation types have been defined to not only improve the consistency of archived data, but also to compensate for the heterogeneity in the different scientific fields.

With the contributions of PANGAEA, DataONE now exposes over 1.1M data objects across the network of Member Nodes <https://www.dataone.org/current-member-nodes> As with PANGAEA, DataONE has a focus on Earth and environmental sciences and additionally exposes social science data and archeological data, supporting interdisciplinary research through efficient access to data across related domains. PANGAEA’s interoperability framework enables the dissemination of metadata and data to registries, data portals, and other service providers such as DataONE. The system also allows data to be published as supplements to science articles or as citable data collections in combination with data journals.

DataONE is pleased to welcome PANGAEA as a partner and expose PANGAEA’s collection to the DataONE community.

About DataONE <https://www.dataone.org/>: DataONE enables universal access to data and also facilitates researchers in fulfilling their need for data management and in providing secure and permanent access to their data. DataONE offers the scientific community a suite of tools and training materials that cover all aspects of the data life cycle from data collection, to management, analysis and publication.

About PANGAEA <https://www.pangaea.de/>: The system was initially developed since 1992 and is operational on the Internet since 1995. PANGAEA is hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Bremerhaven and the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM), Bremen in Germany. PANGAEA continues to be a data management partner in numerous national to international projects. PANGAEA is accredited as a World Data Center by the International Council for Science World Data System (ICSU WDS) and operates the “World Radiation Monitoring Center” (WRMC). As such it is accredited as a "Data Collection and Processing Center" (DCPC) of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Information System (WIS).
