Dear colleagues,

We are organizing a Data Science for Geosciences short course at GSA 2018 on Nov. 3 Saturday morning. We will share the experience of several successful use cases from recent projects. If you or your students are attending GSA 2018 at Indianapolis, welcome to register.

520. Data Science for Geosciences: Latest Successful Stories and Hands-on Practice.
Sat., 3 Nov., 8 a.m.–noon. US$80. Limit: 40. CEU: 0.4.
Instructors: Peter Fox, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Anirudh Prabhu, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Fang Huang, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Cosponsor: GSA Geoinformatics Division.

Abstract:Modern-day scientific research revolves around the generation/collection, usage, and interpretation of data. Data science is advancing the inductive conduct of science driven by greater volumes, complexity and heterogeneity of data. Big data analytics can help dig out some knowledge and trends hidden among individual small datasets. This short course will teach participants the full data life cycle, relevant methodologies to allow them to efficiently use the data to gain valuable insights about the domain and improve decision making. Participants will be presented with some of the latest success stories on applying data science methods to improve their own understanding of a given domain. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own data to work on during the live coding sessions.

Best,

—Marshall
