The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP <http://esipfed.org/>) present
the 2020 webinar series:

Putting Data to Work: Building Public-Private Partnerships to Increase
Resilience & Enhance the Socioeconomic Value of Data

*Quantifying and Communicating Climate Change Risk at First Street (*TODAY*
Thurs. October 8th at 3 pm ET)*The First Street Foundation is quantifying
and communicating the flood and inundation risks posed by a changing
environment. First Street has created a nation-wide assessment of flood
risk for the contiguous United States (CONUS) and the District of Columbia,
and is now sharing that assessment for free with the public through Flood
Factor(TM <http://floodfactor.com/>). Risk scores for each of the
approximately 142 million properties in CONUS were built upon open data from
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United
States Geological Survey (USGS), the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE),
and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Flood risk from rivers,
precipitation, sea level rise, and coastal storms have been combined into a
single risk assessment methodology to raise individuals' awareness of their
risks, and empower them to take steps to reduce their current and future
flood risk exposure.

*Dr. Ed Kearns *is the Chief Data Officer of First Street Foundation, and
as such, provides leadership for the organization’s science and data
activities.
Dr. Kearns previously served as Chief Data Officer for the U.S. Department
of Commerce, overseeing the governance and management of data assets from
its 12 bureaus. Appointed as NOAA’s first Chief Data Officer in 2017, he
has led the development of strategies and practices for managing NOAA’s data as
a national asset. Kearns promotes new uses and wider understanding of
federal data through new public-private partnerships and technologies, such
as the NOAA Big Data Project. As a workgroup leader for the White House’s
Leveraging Data as a Strategic Asset initiative, he helped develop the new
Federal Data Strategy. Previously, Dr. Kearns led climate data and archive
activities for NOAA; guided Everglades restoration projects for the
National Park Service; calibrated NASA satellite-based ocean data products;
and developed ocean data systems as a professor at the University of Miami.
Dr. Kearns holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Marine Science from
the University of Miami, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Physical
Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island.
