Hello ESIP, Please consider joining the virtual event below.

*The Geological Society of America (GSA) Geoinformatics & Data Science
Division presents:*

*Virtual Meet & Greet with Yolanda Gil: Geoinformatics Communities,
Challenges, & Opportunities*
*When:* Wednesday March 15, 2023 from 1-2 pm ET
*Where:* Online

*About the Event*
Yolanda Gil, recipient of the 2022 M. Lee Allison Award for Outstanding
Contributions to Geoinformatics and Data Science
<https://www.geosociety.org/GSA/About/awards/GSA/Awards/2022/geoinfo.aspx>,
will join us for this live virtual meet and greet, where she will discuss
her adventures in connecting with different geosciences communities and
learning about their geoinformatics challenges, as well as some of the
opportunities she chose to pursue herself. After Yolanda’s remarks, a
generous amount of time will remain for Q&A. Anyone with an interest in or
curiosity about geoinformatics and/or data science, including students and
early career researchers, is welcome to join us for this event.

Yolanda Gil is Principal Scientist and Senior Director for Strategic
Initiatives in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the Information
Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California, Director of AI
and Data Science Initiatives in the Viterbi School of Engineering, and
Research Professor in Computer Science and in Spatial Sciences. She
received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Carnegie
Mellon University, with a focus on artificial intelligence and cognitive
science. Dr. Gil collaborates with scientists in many domains on semantic
workflows and metadata capture, provenance and trust, social knowledge
collection, computer-mediated collaboration, and automated discovery. In
2019 she co-chaired the CRA/AAAI 20-Year Artificial Intelligence Research
Roadmap for the US with key strategic recommendations based on extensive
community engagement. She initiated and led the W3C Provenance Group that
resulted in a widely-used standard that provides the foundations for trust
on the Web. She is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery
(ACM), the Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). She is also
Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence
(AAAI) and served as its 24th President.

*About the GSA Geoinformatics & Data Science Division*The purpose of the
Division is to bring together scientists interested in Geoinformatics; to
facilitate the presentation and discussion of their problems and ideas; to
stimulate communication among earth scientists and computer scientists; to
promote research and the publication of results; to support development of
new educational technologies; to support workshops in assisting the
community to benefit from the use of technological and scientific
infrastructure to advance integrative science; and to advise and assist the
officers and committees of the Society in matters pertaining to
Geoinformatics. Learn more at
