AGU: December 9-13, 2024, Washington, DC
Section: Union Sessions
U016: Reward Structures for Engaged Research and Applications: Barriers, Enablers, and Smart Practices
The connection of science to support decision-making activities to benefit society has received increasing attention. Work and scholarship towards these connections enable societal benefits and are of strategic importance to build public trust in science. Yet, reward structures in our institutions for such community- and partner-engaged research (aka, applications) are not always aligned to recognize or incentivize such work. Plus, skills to support this work are not necessarily part of traditional academic programs in Earth science.
We invite papers that characterize both barriers and enablers with reward structures for engaged research and applications, spanning natural and social sciences. Papers can highlight successes, smart practices, and structural changes in institutions that recognize, reward, and incentivize such work and scholarship. We invite papers that address diversity, equity, and inclusion on this topic. We invite papers highlighting the skills associated with engaged research and applications plus programs providing professional certification for such work.
