at Virginia Tech is recruiting a computational research specialist to
develop, manage, and improve forecasting workflows across multiple
domains in ecology. The candidate will be chosen based on prior
experience, with salary commensurate with experience and expertise. This
position can be remote or in-person with a preference for in-person;
remote work would be synchronous with the team in the eastern U.S. time
zone. <br><br>We seek an energetic and enthusiastic team member to join
our innovative and dynamic research group to help develop real-time
forecasting software and computing infrastructure that will inform
day-to-day environmental resource management. This position will be a
core member of our research team, which includes multiple faculty
members, post-docs, and students working at the intersection of
environmental science and data science to co-create usable software and
data products for our research team and the broader community. This
position will provide many opportunities for skill and professional
growth within our interdisciplinary collaborative team, which integrates
team science, community engagement, and education within our scientific
mission.<br><br>Responsibilities for this position include: management
of cloud-based environmental data and workflows, web dashboard
development and deployment, development of open-source software,
development of open training materials, supporting programming efforts
of the team, and administration and upkeep of servers and cloud
infrastructure.<br><br>Candidates should submit a cover letter
addressing how they meet the required and preferred qualifications
described below, resume/CV detailing relevant work experience, and list
of three references with their contact information. This position is for
at least two years, contingent upon satisfactory performance reviews.

<p>• Bachelor’s degree in data science, environmental science, statistics, computer science, or related field<br>• Must have excellent teamwork and collaborative skills to work effectively on computational research <br>• Proficiency in R (or similar programming language)<br>• Experience with command line interface<br>• Experience with collaborative coding using Git and GitHub<br>• Experience with data visualization in R or similar language<br>• Excellent and demonstrated organizational and efficient time management skills<br>• Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and graphical communication skills</p>
