There is increasing attention to enabling uses of Earth science to support policy, management, and decision making. Lots has been learned about effective ways
of doing this work and the multiple pathways and dynamic interactions involved. Yet we seem stuck with the same metaphor of a “bridge” to depict science and society engagement. This metaphor can over-emphasize the linear nature and over-simplify the iterative
nature of the interactions. It also neglects the inclusion of other expertise often critical to achieving success. The connections of science and decision making can follow multiple pathways depending on the organizations involved and their experience and
motivations.

This session will re-think the bridge and re-imagine metaphors for connecting science, society, and decision making. People can propose new metaphors, highlight the pros/cons, and share examples
to illustrate its merit and value. We will consider suitable metaphors and then poll attendees on which metaphors should move forward.
