Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to attend the first of three upcoming workshops in a series on Satellite and Above-Boundary Layer Observations for Air Quality Management sponsored by the EPA Working Group on Satellite Observations for Air Quality Management. Information on the workshop is available at: http://www.cleanairinfo.com/nasa_epa_noaa/index.htm, which includes links to the workshop registration site and logistic information.

This workshop series is being held to bring together experts from the air quality management community (drawn from EPA, states, tribes, local agencies, industry, and academia) with key federal partners (NASA and NOAA) and other experts from the satellite observations community to improve our collective understanding of the potential applications of satellite observations and complementary ground-based remote sensing and other relevant measurement systems for air quality management. This series of workshops is intended to help create a dialogue between these communities.

The objectives for the workshop series are to accelerate the use of satellite data for applications and societal benefit; further develop and maximize the use of government, private, and academic partnerships along with leveraging of existing activities between EPA, NASA, and NOAA; and assist in defining key observational and data requirements for future environmental observations (air quality relevant) from space.

The first workshop is scheduled for May 9-10 in Boulder, CO. This workshop is focused on creating a dialogue between members of the Air Quality management community and scientists from the NASA and NOAA satellite community in areas of mutual interest within the Air Quality Management (AQM) process. The first workshop will focus on air quality implementation and management areas from the air quality community perspective. The goal for the first workshop is to provide an opportunity for the different communities to establish new and strengthen existing connections between the different AQM areas and the application of current and future satellite data products, identify productive areas for on-going case studies that can be further developed for the second workshop, and start to identify or endorse future satellite observational requirements.

This workshop is being held in conjunction with the first science team meeting of the NASA Air Quality Applied Science Team (AQAST) and will be followed by the 2nd NASA GEO-CAPE community workshop on May 11-13, 2011.

Posters are being solicited via the registration site with an emphasis in the following areas:

* Data systems focused on improved data access for applied science and applications

* Model related applications (assimilation, evaluation and emission inventory)

*         Improvements in exposure assessments

*         Air quality-climate interactions

*         Success stories of Research-to-Application

* Measurement and/or modeling studies relevant to planned satellite missions

Poster space will be allocated on a first-registered, first-served basis, and will be provided only for those posters that have been 'preregistered.' Posters are limited to a space that is four feet wide by four feet tall.

We hope that you will be able to join us for this important workshop. Further descriptions of the second and third workshops, along with potential dates and locations will be provided in the future.

 Regards,

James Szykman, Scott Jackson, and Terry Keating - USEPA
