Thanks all. Below is a draft proposal. I will list me Jessica and Nancy as conveners. Please comment at will. We can finalize at the call next week.

cheers,

Research Object Citation Cluster Working Session
ESIP has published guidelines for citing data and for citing software and services. These have been important and influential ESIP products. Now a new cluster is working to address the issues of “research object” citation writ large. The cluster has been working to identify the various types of research objects that could or should be cited such as samples, instruments, annotations, and other artifacts. We have also been examining the various concerns that may be addressed in citing the objects such as access, credit or attribution, and scientific reproducibility. We find that citation of different types of objects may need to address different concerns and that different approaches may be necessary for different concerns and objects. We have, therefore, been working through a matrix<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VEYPLgTsCR_zbMUbThonBrqaYqBiMT4e525NzFi7ql8/edit#gid=0> that attempts to map all the various objects and citation concerns.
In this working session, we will provide a brief overview of the clusters work to date and then work in small groups to further flesh out the matrix. Our goal is to have a complete draft of the matrix by the end of the session as well as some potential follow-on activities for the cluster.

+1 for me too. I will be happy to help with any pre-work and discussion, but I will not be at the ESIP Winter meeting.
Rama.

I like that idea, with possibly a brief summary of what the group has been working on with research artifacts in the beginning. That way people who may not want to be part of the matrix part can still find out information about current citation recommendations and directions. Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the 17th, but I can help with the session.

Hey Citation folks,

What do y’all think of proposing a working session for the winter meeting to perhaps finalize our matrix and identify next steps?

Session proposals are due the 18th and we have a call the 17th where we can discuss, but I would very much welcome opinions and ideas in advance.

cheers,

-m.
