Subject: ESIP Disaster Lifecycle Cluster draft agenda for January 8, 2015 ESIP Winter Meeting

Greetings and Happy Holidays!

It’s been a busy month! The ESIP Disasters Life Cycle<http://wiki.esipfed.org/index.php/Disasters> co-hosted session at AGU in San Francisco on Dec 15 was well received for both the oral session (including Rahul on Data Albums and Maggi on E-DECIDER) with 8 talks total, and the poster session with ~25 posters. My poster addressed the information architect’s view of Earth observations for disasters, specifically to explore and discuss the collaboration goals of our ESIP cluster. It is reposted at the ESIP 2015 Winter meeting<http://commons.esipfed.org/2015WinterMeeting> with the idea stimulating discussion on cluster activities for the new year.

Here is our draft agenda for the January 8 8:30 am session<http://commons.esipfed.org/node/2698> and the 10:30 am session<http://commons.esipfed.org/node/2699> . Note that the sessions will have WebEx connectivity for calling in (to be supplied).

8:30 – 9:30 am ET
Collaborative Common Operating Picture (C-COP) Testbed: concept, status, and way forward
Dave Jones/StormCenter Inc
Maggi Glasscoe/NASA JPL
Discussion on the new ESIP sponsored testbed: concept, status, initial experience on how the testbed works, followed by discussion on testbed activities for 2015.

9:30 – 9:50 am ET
The GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot (AIP) program: background, recent results, opportunities in future
Bart De Lathouwer/OGC
Discussion on related architecture pilot activities for GEOSS
Note: George Percivall/OGC will discuss the overall GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot (AIP) an an agile development process for the GEOSS Information System, on Tuesday at 16:00 in the Foggy Bottom Room. This session is intended to explore the disasters domain in more detail.

9:50 – 10:00 am ET
Testbed wrap up discussion for 2015 plans
Emily Law/NASA JPL, Karen Moe/NASA, and all

10:00 – 10:30 am Break

10:30 – 11:00 am ET
Emerging Earth Science Technologies in Disaster Risk Management and the Volunteered Cloud Computing (VCC) Prototype
John Evans/GST
Kevin Dobbs/KU
John will discuss his NASA sponsored report on technology trends and implications for application in data systems for disasters support, including experience with VCC enabling technologies. Kevin will discuss recent experience with Google Earth Engine. This will be followed by discussion of possible future technology-themed activities for 2015.

11:00 – 11:20 am ET (TBC)
Announcing the disasters.data.gov resource from the Office of Science and Technology Policy
Denice Ross/DOE
An overview and demo is planned for the new online presence of White House Innovation for Disaster Response and Recovery Initiative which was initiated in response to Hurricane Sandy.

11:20 – 12:00 pm ET
Information Architecture Activities for Disaster Risk Management
Review Disasters Lifecycle Strategic Plan<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CdLGmlfU-1EEXQZjDz9snR9vWNgMV71enZxmEeU0MS4/edit#heading=h.1lkb0jjpy3xb> for 2015
Karen Moe/NASA
Emily Law/NASA JPL and all
Discussion on the scope of information architecture for the disasters lifecycle and potential activities for 2015. An update to the 2015 strategic plan reflecting the testbed and other activities we want to pursue (such as outreach activities, and identifying end user organizations we may want to engage.)

Best wishes for the holidays!
