Dave--

Well, I think you should look at our SEDAC Hazards Mapper:

http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/mapping/hazards/#

It's just been updated to our 2015 Gridded Population of the World
dataset and supports simple population queries (circles and polygons).
Other layers may also be of interest, e.g., locations of major dams
and reservoirs and nuclear power plants.

BTW, our HazPop iOS app was just updated yesterday in the iTunes
store:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hazards-population-mapper/id1092168898?mt=8
It now provides 2015 pop estimates (circles only). The mobile app
implements selected location services such as monitoring of
user-defined areas and distance measurement.

We're definitely interested in opportunities to learn more
about user needs so we can improve both our backend services
and data and our various client tools.

Cheers, Bob
