So to hopefully clarify… there’s "S3 object metadata" as key-value information attached to an S3 object, not part of the object’s content. I think this is what Bob is against, and I agree with him.

The NCO JSON Bob mentioned is an example of consolidated metadata object, where information about the entire file (container) content is collected into a single object. The same Hyrax DMR++ and Zarr .zmetadata.
