[Esip-earthcollaboratory] ESC Telecon Monday April 29

This time conflicts with a regularly-scheduled team meeting here so I
won't be able to make it. This is no excuse for my lack of
contributions to the candidate technology list so far.

For those of you not subscribed to the RDA-all list, I re-post these
threads regarding tools for online collaboration:
http://forum.rd-alliance.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=23
http://lists.lists.rd-alliance.org/mailman/private/rda-all/2013-March/thread.html

The latter is accessible only to subscribers so I paste below a post
summarizing the discussion up to that time (3/21):

To summarize in a non-technical language what has been discussed so far,
it seems that we need:

- a space for collaboration on multiple projects (WGs and other
sub-communities)
- notifications of events and activities in both push and pull forms
(e.g., website announcements + newsletter or RSS)
- user profile system to keep track of members, conference attendees,
teams, etc.
- sharing capabilities to send content wider (e.g., via Twitter, email,
etc.)
- group communication tools (voice, video)
- flexible authentication that supports multiple roles (public, RDA
member, WG member, etc.)

Forum is a nice tool, but it only serves the purposes of simple
discussions, not distributed conversations and collaborations.

So far, the following options were mentioned:

Drupal OG http://drupal.org/project/og (supports group interactions via
homepage + blogs, pages, etc., customizable)
Trac http://trac.edgewall.org/ (used for software development projects,
customizable, with enhanced wiki and issue tracking system)
GitHub https://github.com/ (project management, simpler than Trac)
Redmine http://www.redmine.org/ (clean, simple wiki markup, trackers)
TWiki http://twiki.org/ (wiki, document management)
Liferay http://www.liferay.com/ (content management, hard initial
set-up, but flexible user privileges)
HUBzero http://hubzero.org/ (content management system plus simulation
tools)
Open Science Framework (supports large scientific collaborations, see
example here http://openscienceframework.org/project/EZcUj/wiki/home)

It seems that almost any project or content management tool would
support most of our needs but not all. So the choice goes back to
usability and cost and resources for initial set up and maintenance.
