Join us TODAY, Wednesday, December 10th at 3:00 pm ET to learn about an exciting new training opportunity on water resources and flood forecasting that will take place during the summer of 2015!
The academic community, coordinated by CUAHSI, is being invited by the National Weather Service and its partner federal agencies to participate in a National Flood Interoperability Experiment (NFIE) to help build a new high resolution, near real-time hydrologic simulation and forecasting model for the United States.   This opportunity is created through the opening of a new National Water Center on the Tuscaloosa campus of the University of Alabama, which is to become the national center for river flow forecasting.  The intent is to establish a research partnership with the academic community that will sustain innovation into the future.
The National Water Center and the University of Alabama will host a seven week intensive Summer Institute. The program will provide the opportunity for students to participate in developing and modifying a prototype NFIE flow modeling and data testbed that is being created based on the NHDPlus geospatial dataset describing the nation's river network. In addition, the Summer Institute will provide training on the following topics:

  *   Modern information services made available through web services
  *   Introduction to hydrometeorologic models such as WRF-Hydro and RAPID
  *   Distributed high performance computing environments
  *   Best practices in programming and application development


The Summer Institute is slated to take place June 1 through July 17, 2015. Incoming graduate students through PhD students will be eligible to apply; additional details regarding the application process will be forthcoming. Student travel funding is anticipated to be available to help defray the cost of participation in this program.
The entire community is invited to attend this webinar to learn more about the NFIE - an exciting new initiative aimed at advancing flood forecasting technology. The webinar will include presentations by Don Cline (National Weather Service), David Maidment (University of Texas at Austin), Rick Hooper (CUAHSI), and Andy Ernest (University of Alabama). It will be the first in a series of free webinars which will describe the NFIE program structure and the information and modeling sources available, as well as potential lines of research that could be pursued through the NFIE training program. Webinars will be archived on the CUAHSI website for later viewing.
