Hi Wade,
I think the abstract for the ESIP summer meeting breakout session is fine. I hope you are able to submit this by today. It can always be fine tuned as we identify specific speakers. Thanks for putting this together for the EnviroSensing cluster.

Don Henshaw

Sorry I might have missed it but what/where is this breakout session for?

thanks

Hi folks,

Apologies for the slow follow-up, but we had some nasty weather in GA that knocked us offline Wednesday. But in follow-up to our discussion, here's a draft for a break-out session proposal. In addition to Matt and myself (or someone else from Mike's group), I was planning to ask Matt Jones about having someone from DataONE talk about R-ONE, the R package they support for documenting data and submitting them to a DataONE repository from that software. Comments, suggested edits and other ideas for speakers would be appreciated. Proposals are due Monday and I'm leaving early for a trip to UCSB, so I'll need to submit by Sunday night if we're going ahead with this.

Thanks.

Wade Sheldon

Topic:Tools and Strategies for End-to-End Sensor Data Management

Session Type:Breakout Session

Abstract:

The low cost and ubiquity of electronic sensors and increasingly practical options for setting up sensor networks have revolutionized environmental science. Emerging standards and web services for accessing sensor data and tasking sensors via the internet are further accelerating this trend. Investigators can now acquire vast amounts of sensor data as they conduct their research, but efficiently managing, documenting and quality-controlling those data and submitting them to a suitable repository is still problematic for many. This breakout session will focus on practical software tools and cloud-based services for establishing an end-to-end sensor data management strategy. It will include four or five presentations on new cloud-based services for acquiring sensor data (e.g. CHORDS), software libraries for documenting and quality-controlling data using common software frameworks (e.g. MATLAB, R), and options for automating submission of sensor data to repositories (e.g. EDI, other Dat aONE nodes). This session will also be coordinated with a panel discussion on sensor data standards and tool development needs for fully enabling end-to-end sensor data management.
