A multi-scale approach to groundwater surface water modelling in the Neversink Reservoir watershed

Abstract: Exchanges of groundwater and surface-water impact streamflow generation, permanence, temperature, and cold-water habitat along mountain stream networks. There is a paucity of data regarding channel heat and water exchange processes in headwater streams (i.e., 1st-3rd order), though recent USGS research has indicated high spatial variability in such processes at the sub-km scale driven in part by geologic complexity. Starting in 2019, the Next Generation Water Observing System Program has tested evolving combinations of direct groundwater discharge zone instrumentation at gage sites within the upper Neversink River subbasin, NY. These hydrological data were paired with drone-based data collection and fixed-mount thermal infrared cameras. Additionally, a network of stream water and local air temperature monitoring was established at 51 sites throughout the subbasin, and geophysical depth to bedrock, stream radon, and stable water isotope data were collected at all sites. We will describe how the monitoring of variably sourced groundwater discharge at the local scale is informing interpretation of subbasin-scale stream data, leading to improved understanding of groundwater/surface-water exchange processes.
