[Esip-envirosensing] Envirosensing Cluster Call TODAY! Tuesday, Sep 5th, at 5:00 pm EDT (2:00 pm PDT) Summer Recap and Strategic Planning

Steve,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I agree, it would be nice to keep a catalog of these crowdsourced environmental sensing efforts. I work in the air sensors space, myselt.

On a related note, I think one of the critical needs for air sensors is the lack of data/metadata standards. I know that OGC has SensorML and other associated web services standards and ontologies. I wonder if there are people at ESIP that could help in developing these existing technologies for the air sensors domain? an AirSensorML???

Cheers and thank you

Vasu

Alas, I will not be able to make the call. I do want to at least contribute a bit of thinking for the strategic planning.

I recently "got in the game" with a PurpleAir air quality sensor for PM2.5 that I was able to successfully deploy and get on the internet without too much difficulty. For me, as someone with dated and sketchy technical skills, it was great to have infrastructure to support getting going ( purpleair.com<http://purpleair.com/> ). I encountered a little issue with getting the sensor up live on the PurpleAir site, and PurpleAir's user support was excellent and talked me through it painlessly. I am at least semi-aware of a number of other interesting types of crowdsource/community science sensing initiatives. Lots of weather stuff for sure. For example, I see that Sparkfun has a very inexpensive weather IoT kit out, although I'm not sure about the software and networking support. There is lightning detection (see for example https://www.lightningmaps.org<https://www.lightningmaps.org/> ) and seismicity/infrasound ( https://raspberryshake.org/ ) and I'm sure many more interesting projects I don't know about. Anyway, my points are it might be useful and fun to strive to compile a database of efforts such as these and to think about how the cluster could help individuals jumpstart their own sensing projects. It might be interesting to not only track interesting projects but also sort of review them in terms of cost, difficulty of actual deployment, etc. It also could be interesting to identify "low hanging fruit" sensing areas, where there may not be much out there yet, but there is perceived demand and utility. Group ideas on that could be shared with academic teams and others to encourage them to work on them...

I hope these are helpful thoughts. Feel free to ping me if you'd like to kick around more offline.

It was great to see many of you at the ESIP Summer Meeting, and it was fun to do a bit of hands-on stuff! Best and cheers,

Dear Envirosensors,

I am reaching out to remind everyone of our monthly Envirosensing Cluster Call happening TODAY! Tuesday, Sep 5th, at 5:00 pm EDT (2:00 pm PDT). We're eager to have as many of you as possible join us for an interactive session.

Post-Summer Meeting Recap & Cluster Strategic Planning

In lieu of our usual guest speaker format, today’s session will pivot to a more in-depth cluster discussion. The main items on the agenda are:

1. Post-Summer Meeting Recap: We will walk through the key takeaways and feedback from our recent summer meeting. This will provide an opportunity for everyone to share their perspectives, highlight what worked well, and discuss areas of potential improvement.

2. Cluster Strategic Planning for the Future: A vital part of ensuring the continued success of our cluster is to align on our future direction. This segment will be led by Envirosensing Co Chair Joseph Bell of the USGS. We hope to set clear strategic objectives for the upcoming months.

Looking forward to a productive call!

Warm regards,

Jake, Joe, Scotty, and Martha
