Hi there, and thnks for your email -

I am on unanticipated family medical leave until Sept 11. I will not have email access during this time.

If you have a immediate concern, please contact the Earth Science office (earth@montana.edu).

Thank you for your patience until I am back in the office and online.

Kind regards -
Alas, I will not be able to make the call. I do want to at least contribute a bit of thinking for the strategic planning.

I recently "got in the game" with a PurpleAir air quality sensor for PM2.5 that I was able to successfully deploy and get on the internet without too much difficulty. For me, as someone with dated and sketchy technical skills, it was great to have infrastructure
to support getting going ( purpleair.com ). I encountered a little issue with getting the sensor up live on the PurpleAir site, and PurpleAir's user support was excellent and talked me through
it painlessly. I am at least semi-aware of a number of other interesting types of crowdsource/community science sensing initiatives. Lots of weather stuff for sure. For example, I see that Sparkfun has a very inexpensive weather IoT kit out, although I'm not
sure about the software and networking support. There is lightning detection (see for example
https://www.lightningmaps.org ) and seismicity/infrasound (
https://raspberryshake.org/ ) and I'm sure many more interesting projects I don't know about. Anyway, my points are it might be useful and fun to strive
to compile a database of efforts such as these and to think about how the cluster could help individuals jumpstart their own sensing projects. It might be interesting to not only track interesting projects but also sort of review them in terms of cost, difficulty
of actual deployment, etc. It also could be interesting to identify "low hanging fruit" sensing areas, where there may not be much out there yet, but there is perceived demand and utility. Group ideas on that could be shared with academic teams and others
to encourage them to work on them...

I hope these are helpful thoughts. Feel free to ping me if you'd like to kick around more offline.
It was great to see many of you at the ESIP Summer Meeting, and it was fun to do a bit of hands-on stuff! Best and cheers,
