Dear Colleagues,

The AGU 2018 Fall Meeting will be held on 10-14, Dec. 2018 in Washington, DC. The meeting website is now open for submission of abstracts. We would like to welcome your submission to the following session.

Session ID: 44175
Session Title: IN016. Communicating Scientific Data Quality through the Lens of Uncertainty
Section/Focus Group: Earth and Space Science Informatics
Session Details:

Session Description:

Regardless of the scientific discipline, a fundamental characteristic of science is the exploration of truth, which implies understanding imperfections in data as well as methods of interpretation, arriving at sound conclusions, and taking steps to characterize and improve the representativeness of data and derived products. Fundamental to such understanding and improvement is conveying accurate and rich information about the observations, model outputs, and scientific findings to peers who work in similar as well as related disciplines. For highly influential scientific findings that support policy decisions with significant societal impact, US laws require traceability, transparency, and clear articulation of uncertainty involved to ensure data trustworthiness. The goal of this session is to understand how various groups and disciplines are defining uncertainty, conveying or sharing methodologies across domains for their data users, and paving the way to explore how conveying uncertainty information can be made more consistent across multiple Earth science domains.
