Dear community,

We would like to encourage you to submit an abstract to our EGU session. The EGU General Assembly will take place in Vienna / online (23-28 April 2023).

Better ESS Research with Reproducibility Practices, Quality Information, and Provenance Metadata (https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU23/session/45418)

The goal of this session is to identify relations of reproducibility, quality information, and provenance with respect to facilitate research data management in Earth System Sciences (ESS).

Reproducibility of research is a cornerstone of science. Only transparent and openly licensed sharing of research artefacts enables other researchers to reuse and expand on other researcher's works. Reproducibility is a complex topic that spans technology, research communities, and research culture, so in this session it shall be explored from two perspectives:
First, one can argue that open and reproducible research (ORR) provides better quality information through transparency and sharing. The quality information from ORR allows going beyond limited research metrics and can help to advance research. For example, openness & transparency (1) may make creators more careful in sharing research artefacts, (2) enables inspection by others, and (3) facilitates re-use of methods/tools with multiple use cases. Is there a straight line that can be drawn from quality information from ORR to the quality of research and the impact of a piece of research?
Second, a crucial aspect to document results in research workflows is provenance and one can argue that provenance is a precursor to ORR and for providing accurate quality information. However, capturing provenance metadata is (1) not an attractive topic, and (2) not supported by many tools. Can ORR be achieved without specific handling of provenance information?

We welcome abstracts presenting novel methods and tools addressing at least one corner of the triangle of reproducibility, quality information, and provenance.
We also invite contributions on perspectives on current challenges, studies on reproducibility vs. provenance and reproducibility vs. quality as well as reports on (un)successful reproductions

We look forward to fruitful talks and discussions and hope that you will consider participating onsite or virtually.
