Hello Everyone,
Please join this week's call on 2023-06-08 at 11 am PT/ 2 pm ET for a
presentation from Jim Swift on "Cleaned Ocean Section Data for Education
and Research":
GO-SHIP and similar reference quality vertical section hydrographic and CTD
> data are the gold standard for a wide range of measurements and analyses.
> Although they are carefully curated, original section data at the data
> centers often contain peculiarities which make them somewhat less
> accessible to non-aficionados: the CTD/hydrographic stations might not have
> been collected in optimum geographical order, the files may contain extra
> profiles not of primary interest, there may be multiple casts at some
> locations, there may be multiple bottles closed at some levels, data from
> multiple cruises might be required to form a complete trans-oceanic section
> (and there may be overlap between the pieces), the original data may
> contain uncertain and bad values (usually known and coded appropriately),
> incomplete casts sometimes leave vertical data gaps which distort plots,
> and so forth. As a hobby project, the author has been cleaning a growing
> inventory of ocean transect data to make them as useful and informative as
> feasible. These carefully vetted data are available to the educational and
> research communities (presently at https://joa.ucsd.edu/Data_homepage#).
The presentation will be followed by question and answer, and a chance to
look at uses for this dataset.
We hope you can join!
PS - Reminder that the ESIP Summer Meeting
<https://2023julyesipmeeting.sched.com/> is July 18-21, 2023 in Burlington,
VT, and the Marine Data Cluster will be holding a session on the UN Ocean
Decade. Please reach out to the MDC Admin (cberysgonzalez at ucsd.edu,
mathew.biddle at noaa.gov) by June 10th if you are interested in participating.
