Dear colleagues-
The ESIP Open Science (OS) cluster was spun up in the Spring of 2022. Over the last 18+ months the cluster has implemented multiple activities. These include 13 monthly OS cluster meetings to discuss/develop a roadmap for the cluster; two OS sessions at the ESIP Summer 2022 and Winter 2023 meetings (the latter co-hosted by the OS and Information Quality clusters); and the generation of a collaboratively developed 'OS Mindmap' to capture emerging trends around OS based on the multitude of expertise of the ESIP community. Most recently, the cluster has developed and implemented a monthly webinar series to highlight and raise awareness around several OS themes including: trust in open science, open science infrastructure considerations, and open science incentives. These webinars have brought together experts and thought leaders including:
Sept: Dr. Natasha Stavros - Open Science Cyberinfrastructure Supports Equitable Access to NASA Big Data; The ImgSPEC Case Study
August: Dr. Jim Colliander - 2i2c: Building open source infrastructure for research, education & local communities
July: Dr. Irene Pasquetto - What is research data "misuse"? And how can it be prevented or mitigated?
June: Dr Flavio Azevedo - Framework for Open & Reproducible Research Training (FORRT)
May: Dr. Andrea Thomer - Past Global Change Research: Connect Data through FAIR & Care
We are looking forward to our October webinar on 17th, Making Sausage: How and why open source scientific software gets made -- and what keeps us from making more, with Mike Mahoney; and the final webinar of the series on November 28th.
At the end of the year, we will be stepping down as co-chairs of the Open Science Cluster. We have very much enjoyed co-leading the cluster and being part of its evolution. We would like to see the cluster continue to evolve as open science continues to evolve and expand. If you are interested in chairing the cluster, we encourage you to contact us, and we will gladly share our thoughts and 'pass over the reins'.
Thanks to each of our colleagues who have participated in the ESIP Open Science cluster progress to-date,
Jenny and Cyndi
