[Esip-preserve] A Reference on Classification and Cataloging

Some of the problems that seem to bedevil us relate to developing
classifications and categories. An interesting book written by a well-known
professor of Semiotics (the study of "signs", "signifying," and linguistics)
is
Eco, U., 1997: Kant and the Platypus: Essays on Language and Cognition,
Harcourt, San Diego, CA
Kant, if I read correctly was one of those philosophers who wanted the
create a hierarchical catalog of "everything". It took biologists about 100
years to provide a fairly "settled" categorization of the Platypus. Eco at
least has a sense of humor about this - giving the sentence "This is a
mouse,
but it is eighty meters long and weighs eight hundred kilograms." a few
comments. He also notes that there's a difference between "Dictionary
knowledge" and "Encyclopedia knowledge," suggesting that "Encyclopedic
knowledge, ... would be uncoordinated by nature, with an uncontrollable
format, and the encyclopedic content of `dog' would have to include
practically all that is known and could be known about dogs ..." [Op. Cit.,
p. 226]. This description sounds too familiar to most of us - but that
truth kind of adds to the admonition about keeping a sense of humor
and civility.
You may note the reference to a particular subset of the text in this book
in the last sentence.
Enjoy.
