Subject: [ISamples] EarthCube iSamples and C4P Early Career Forum at GSA Fall Meeting 2015

To: Graduate Students, Post-Docs, Early Career Scientists, and anyone interested in digital infrastructure for samples.

Do you deal with any type of samples as part of your research?

Could you use a stipend to help cover the cost of GSA registration or travel costs?

If your answer is YES, please join the Early Career Samples Workshop while at GSA this November:

This open forum/workshop will include a tutorial on sample registration with IGSN and how to cite samples properly in publications, as well as open discussions of sample management tools and techniques, from field work to research collections to repositories and archiving. We have an opportunity to improve the plight of samples in our science. Please come to share your ideas and learn from your peers.

When: Sunday November 1, 2015 1:30pm-5:00pm

Where: Hilton Holiday Ballroom 1, Baltimore, MD

A limited number of stipends (cost of Early registration) will be provided to those who register for and participate in the forum.

This forum is for graduate students and early career scientists (those within 5 years of completion of a PhD). The project is sponsored by the NSF Earthcube Research Coordination Networks iSamples (the Internet of Samples in the Earth Sciences) and C4P (Collaboration and Cyberinfrastructure for Paleogeoscience). The results will help guide planning and development of an “internet of physical samples” for the Earth sciences. Continued participation in these RCNs is encouraged.

If you are not an early career scientist, but are interested in the forum we will be hosting an open discussion from 4:00-5:00 pm to discuss topics including changing sample management practices in an academic research lab for established faculty scientists. If you wish to attend this discussion, please contact mcarter at ldeo.columbia.edu<mailto:mcarter at ldeo.columbia.edu>.

If you are interested, please fill out a two-part application form (form part 1<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1pOBisYvExQOS_sForXAIrYiwasvjGNYVbtau9j5oS9Y/viewform> and form part 2<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1T-lsbE91uMgMVOPHuJ65qXoGX9-W47_xH51AXaeAKRE/viewform>) by October 16, 2015. To be considered for a stipend you MUST complete both parts of this form.
