This looks somewhat similar to the BCO-DMO ontology that the RPI+WHOI folks have been working on. Maybe that ontology should be mined (or reused wholesale?) for more constructs.

Hi all,

We have been putting together a set of ontological concepts that describe different aspects of the earth science process. The idea is to allow users to create structured information concepts to organize information and data. We have come up with a number of concepts:

Program - a collection of projects, a funding umbrella, etc e.g. - NACP, NSF-OPP, NASA-Icebridge
Project - Typically some funded entity with a particular focus
Site - A physical site on earth. Might be an instrument site, a field project site, etc.
Campaign - some intensive operational period in the field
Site visit - a short term visit to some site for data gathering purposes
Field note - A description of the conditions in the field
Dataset - some uniform collection of files

What other constructs or concepts are people familiar with? In the ESC discussions we've talked about experiments, etc.

-Jeff
