Soren:

Here are the recommendations for an AWS instance from NCBO/Bioportal on which our portal is based:

  *   Minimum
     *   2 CPU (2 GHz)
     *   4GB RAM
     *   Hard disk space: 20GB

  *   Recommended for heavier usage
     *   4 CPU (3 GHz)
     * 8GB RAM (or more depending on the size/number of ontologies)
     * Hard disk space: 20GB (or more depending on number/size of ontologies)

The wiki also mentions that the system requirements will vary greatly depending on the size of ontologies, number of concurrent users, type of use.

The "micro" instance we originally tried had 1 core and 4 GB and did not work. We installed on a "large" size of 2 CPUs and 8 GB of memory. That worked, but we were told at the time that it was too expensive for ESIP, hence the move to servers at U South Carolina.

We can compare this right now to the system requirements for John's instance.

The community also needs to decide what kind of evaluation we want to do: performance, functionality, usability, other?

Just curious - has anyone provided an initial estimate of AWS instance costs based on the system requirements of those BioPortal deployments? Not minimum AWS instances but instances that meet the minimum system requirements and a comparison for more performant installations?

Thanks,
Soren

Good point. I agree that we need a timeline to really make progress.

I'd like to have a working draft within the next two months. Then we can all discuss in person at the summer meeting, hopefully leading to a consensus coming out of the summer meeting.
