information standards and systems

Dear soil data champion,

Apologies for cross-posting.

As you might have heard, the World Congress on Soil Science (WCSS) of
the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), organised by the
British Society of Soil Science, will take place in Glasgow, UK from 31
July to 5 August 2022. The call for abstracts is now open (deadline 31
October 2021).

We would like to bring to your attention the fact that there will be a
session entitled ‘Soil information standards and systems - current
initiatives and advances’ organised by the IUSS working group on Soil
Information Standards.

As a person with an interest in and/or have worked on soil information
systems, soil data exchange and related standards in one or more
initiatives and networks (like Global soil data exchange, ESIP Soil
Ontology, GODAN Soil Data WG, OGC Agriculture DWG and others) you may
wish to consider submitting a paper.

A description of the session can be found below.

We’d welcome abstracts that meet the objectives of the session and are
convinced that there are a lot of new developments and good examples in
this field that can inspire and provide direction to others. Our aim is
to share knowledge and connect the communities of soil and data experts
working on this topic.

More information on submitting an abstract is available on Abstracts -
22nd World Congress of Soil Science (22wcss.org) and attached.
The session is in principle in person, but we are informed that
discussions are still going on about how to hybridise the sessions and
some sort of remote access is very likely possible. We therefore
encourage you to submit anyway, also if your country currently has
travel restrictions in place.

Please consider submitting an abstract to this session, reach out to us
if you have any questions and forward this email to other soil data
enthusiasts and experts.

We hope to see you in Glasgow next year!

Fenny van Egmond (ISRIC World Soil Information, IUSS SIS WG chair) and
David Medyckyj-Scott (Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research)

WG1.6 Soil information standards and systems - current initiatives and
advances.
Convenors: Fenny van Egmond; David Medyckyj-Scott
There is a growing interest in (inter)national soil information systems
(SIS) to expose and exchange standardised soil information as a basis
for soil research, policy and decision making. This session has the
following objectives.
Presentation of ideas, issues, and experiences on the design,
management and use of SIS.
Discuss emerging (data) standards and technologies and their future
applications to SIS evolution.
Suggest ways to improve the soil data workflow from data collection to
linking standardised provisioned soil data with other data systems.
Discuss social and legal issues related to sharing soil information
through SIS like governance, security, data privacy and (indigenous)
data sovereignty.
Present use cases of demonstrated benefits of SIS for users.

Call for Abstracts for the World Congress of Soil Science 2022

The organisers of The World Congress of Soil Science 2022 (WCSS), the
British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) on behalf of the International
Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), are keen to receive abstract submissions
from international colleagues whose research or practice links to soil.

The WCSS is inviting abstract submissions for the Interdivisional
sessions, the Divisional scientific sessions, and the Working Group
sessions and a full list of sessions, chosen to reflect the Congress
theme, Crossing Boundaries, Changing Society, can be found on the WCSS
website: www.22wcss.org/conference/abstracts.

The abstract submission deadline is 24:00 GMT on the 31 October 2021,
