We had a fantastic kick off meeting today with about 8 folks calling in, although the new time caused a few folks to miss out. We reviewed the spring/summer presentations and there is a plan in the works to curate the YouTube list and create a guide for those interested in soil semantics resources. We have plans for data model/template presentations from data collection/aggregators but are waiting to hear back on exact timings. However we probably have enough to start moving forward with a manuscript!
Broadly speaking folks were interested in the outlined topics (see Soil Data models section on the notes document). But noted gaps in data on hydrology and physical structure
There was an interesting discussion on tabular vs graphical data models; acknowledging the legacy of tabular data in the field but contrasting this with the current ‘data models’ and informatics trends that are emerging using graphical data. This may make a good section on a paper and it would be useful to try to keep in mind as we develop.
Moving forward we are hoping to line up presentations from data aggregation projects but likely have enough information to move forward with a manuscript regardless of response. Look for drafts flying around this fall!
