That said I’m happy to attend your session on the 25th and provide what background I can as a colonial white guy involved in the original paper.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I looked at the git conversation you referenced, and I don’t quite get it. It seems like the first step is to contact representatives of the relevant First Nation (largely a Canadian term) and ask how they would like to be credited and to ensure collective benefit etc. I found the discussion of country/tribe particularly strange. It doesn’t matter if people have not heard of the nation, tribe, or whatever, the relevant people need to be involved.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The issue hits on several of the detailed CARE principles, but I think the general issue can be simplified as “nothing about Indigenous peoples, without Indigenous peoples”.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><div class="">cheers,</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">-m. </div><div><br class=""><blockquote type="cite" class=""><div class="">On Aug 9, 2022, at 1:22 PM, Mathew Biddle - NOAA Federal <<a href="mailto:mathew.biddle@noaa.gov" class="">mathew.biddle@noaa.gov</a>> wrote:</div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"><div class=""><div dir="ltr" class="">Margaret,<div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Thank you for the quick response! For background, this topic presented itself in a conversation with one of our community members on how to appropriately cite First Nations in the metadata for oceanographic data. While this is currently the specific topic of interest to our community, we thought it would be beneficial to bring in the higher level topic of CARE for further discussion while addressing the existing needs.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Thanks,</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Matt </div></div><br class=""><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Tue, Aug 9, 2022 at 2:35 PM Mark Parsons <<a href="mailto:parsonsm.work@icloud.com" class="">parsonsm.work@icloud.com</a>> wrote:<br class=""></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div style="overflow-wrap: break-word;" class="">Hi Matt,<div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I replied to your slack message too, but I could probably present. There are a few talks in the esip-sphere from this group already, which would also serve to introduce your group to this topic and what the cluster has done so far.
