Giovanni-4, the next generation of the popular online analysis and visualization Giovanni tool, is now available for aerosol variables and a subset of services. Go to the "Aerosols Express" portal in Giovanni (http://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov), or go directly to http://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/giovanni/
Giovanni 4 has several improvements over the current Giovanni (Giovanni-3):
o most services are faster, sometimes by an order of magnitude
o interactive scatterplot + map: zoom either the scatterplot or map and see the corresponding changes in the other
o interactive map: zoom and pan the results
o bookmarkable selections: bookmark the current state of the input form and come back later (or again) to the form in exactly the same state
One item of possible interest to the Viz group is the use of WMS and Style Layer Descriptor files in the Interactive Map feature. Suppose we had a community repository of reusable palettes in a standard format (like SLD), one or two for each geophysical measurement. Then one might call WMS for the same measurement at two different data centers, but be able to visually compare them by applying the same palette to each.
