Dear Wildfire Cluster member,
Welcome to the new ESIP Wildfire e-mail list. It is here where we will
distribute information related to our monthly meetings which are planned to
occur every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 4-5 pm ET. We are the co-chairs
of this cluster and we are looking forward to engaging in conversations
about wildfire initiatives, resources, and gaps that exist in the wildfire
decision-making workflows that use trusted data to influence
decision-making. We have also had thoughts based on Fire Chief Winnacker’s
feedback from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District on how best to organize data
to meet his needs on distinguishing between good fire and bad fire. Of
critical importance is knowing the available fuels, soil moisture, fire
weather parameters, and predictive wildfire development and movement. We
have much to discuss over the next 5 months.
Our first meeting will be held next *Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 4 pm
ET* (zoom
information below) and our plan is to review what we discussed in the ESIP
Winter meeting when we launched the cluster, narrow down our areas of
interest and outline our pathway to the ESIP Summer meeting. With so much
attention on the wildfire space these days, Douglas and I have identified
an approach that should enable all of us to wrap our arms around the
challenges and present our path forward for the next year at the ESIP
Summer meeting in Burlington, VT. Perhaps a pre-wildfire cluster
get-together at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream HQ in July is in store…more on that
later.
*Welcome Jenessa Stemke*
Please join us to welcome our NASA Intern, Jenessa Stemke, from Oregon
State University to help support the cluster. Here is a little more about
Jenessa from the NASA Wildland Fire web page:
Jenessa is a senior studying: Nutrition at Oregon State University. Jenessa
also holds a B.S. in Plant Biology and M.S. in Environmental Science from
UC Riverside.
*Hobbies:* Jenessa teaches watercolor painting with plant pigments and
leads educational hikes as an outdoor guide.
*What’s next for Jenessa*: Upon graduating, she plans to remain heavily
involved in fire science, and offer nutrition counseling on a part-time
basis. She hopes to someday teach remote sensing and a fire GIS class.
*What have you been working on during your internship?* I am documenting
needs, barriers, and data gaps in the fire community and working to
identify possible solutions. I’m focusing on how different factors
interact to increase fire severity and frequency, fire impacts, and fire
monitoring and response resources. I have been observing how fire
information is communicated to the public and how the public perceives fire
for several years. I believe that public awareness of fire science is
critical to forming a healthier relationship with fire and our landscapes.
To address this need, I’m creating interactive visuals that summarize my
findings on fire severity that will be easy for the public to understand.
These visuals also emphasize possible solutions.
Special thanks that NASA’s Wildland Fire Program has offered Jenessa’s
expertise and talents to us!
We are working on a short roadmap for the cluster with our eyes on the ESIP
July in-person meeting. We are currently planning to have a poster that
will describe what the Wildfire Cluster will be focusing on during the
second part of the year and to organize a proposed Wildfire session in
Burlington, VT. Here are our plans for the next several months as far as
invited speakers:
Proposed monthly activities for the cluster:
*- April 12*: Agency overview of wildfire priorities and efforts: NOAA & EPA
*- May 10*: Agency overview of wildfire priorities and efforts: NASA
*- June 14*: Agency overview of wildfire priorities and efforts: USGS & USFS
*- July 12*: Cluster discussion to finalize Wildfire Cluster ESIP Poster
content for the July meeting the next week
*- July 18-21*: ESIP July Meeting in Burlington, VT
We also plan to see where cross-cluster collaboration can be applied to
leverage ESIP member expertise and make sure we avoid duplication of
effort. Our January meeting launch revealed that the majority of
participants in the winter meeting session are ready to participate
actively in this cluster. That’s amazing and we welcome your participation!
See you next week!
