[Esip_dmtraining] Curious on process?

Hello, Heather:

My apologies for the delay in response. What we’re trying to do with the efforts of this sub-group of the ESIP Data Stewardship Committee is to move forward on a couple of fronts per the expressed interest of the group (in the rather informal manner of most of the ESIP working groups):

1. Identify topics needed for data management training / learning resources based on:

a. An inventory and analysis of existing resources / topics done last fall by Sophie Hou & Matt Mayernik

                                                               i. The inventory done was funded by an ESIP Funding Friday proposal, and largely conducted by Sophie with significant input from Matt

b. The generation of new topics based on some of the roles of people involved in data production & data management and on data information literacy competencies recommended by an extensive study partially funded by the IMLS (See http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/titles/format/9781612493527)

                                                               i. A small group of people are working on this task mostly on calls separate from the All-Call meetings set up for the first Thursday of the month at 9 am Pacific, 12 noon Eastern. This group would definitely welcome more involvement during the topic generation & evaluation. Let me know if you or anyone else is interested in joining the discussions.

c. The evaluation of an existing outline of topics originally developed in about 2011 by a previous iteration of this subgroup that focused on research scientists, and on data managers.

                                                               i. This effort has yet to begin, so the process is not set. Anyone interested in pursuing / leading this charge is welcome to take it on(!).

d. An evaluation of the need for updating or deleting the existing modules of the Data Management for Scientists Short Course that is on the ESIP Commons

                                                               i. See c.i. above. We welcome leaders / participants in this area. Our goal is to look at this during the ESIP Summer meeting in July.

2. Thanks to seed money received from the USGS, implement a Data Management Training Clearinghouse designed to be a metadata repository for existing educational resources & events focused on data management training.

a. There is another small, coordinating committee working to get this Clearinghouse planned & implemented. Our goal is to have a demo site available for comment & feedback at the ESIP Summer meeting in July. Phase 1 of the implementation is due to be completed by September of this year.

b. Issues related to the plans, approach, services of the Clearinghouse may be brought to the All-Call meetings described above when broad community input is desired. Next one up is this coming Thursday at 9 am Pacific / 12 noon Eastern; input is requested on topics related to the Clearinghouse at this meeting. A notice and agenda will be sent out later today.

Regarding the actual creation of new training resources that are identified as needed, this group has no explicit funding to do that at present, but will be discussing the process by which ESIP-sponsored resources should be created / adapted / modified in the near future, and how that can best be done, with or without funding. The group is also very interested in supporting others who are working in the area of data management training, so I would encourage you or others in your group to join any / all of the discussions outlined above.

Hope this helps. Let me / us know if you have any questions. And, good luck with your efforts too!

Regards,

Nancy Hoebelheinrich

(ESIP DMT Working Group Leader)

Team,

I'm curious about where you are in this process of "revamping" the ESIP Data Management Training. As a member of ESIP and a data manager at NCEI (formerly NCDC) We, NCEI are having to revamp our data management practices and training at this time due to our merger and new processes/roles. I am interested in what you are doing from the sideline prospective. I read through some of the wiki, but I'm still confused on where you're at and how your are soliciting review/feedback on these new training materials.

Thanks for any insight,

Heather
