Dear all

As long as we are not overlapping with the NISO group then it is fine.

I also don’t really know any groups in the Research Data Alliance that is considering this topic either.

However, closer to home, the issue of credit for those associated with the collection, processing and curation of physical samples is on the agenda of the ESIP Physical samples cluster. It would be worth seeing how the samples group could leverage off what you are proposing.

Take care

Lesley

Hi All,

Just chiming in here to say that I think what Madison proposed looks like a great area of focus for the time-being. I do think it's important to zero in on specific areas, like data, in part to identify a specific activity to potentially take on. We don't have to forget about other artifacts. Of course, you can always move on to others or pan back out to focusing on several at a later time. Clusters are not meant to be all things to all people, but instead work on addressing a specific need before moving on to the next need or going on hiatus. With good communication, you can keep the whole mailing list informed and people can show up when it is most useful for them.

Thanks,
Megan

Hi Lesley,

I did attend the NISO CRediT Persona Workshop, and I don't think that this work would overlap with that group. I'm happy to continue talking about other roles in our cluster. I'm just acknowledging that we likely can't do anything super specific without narrowing it to a particular artifact. Let's keep chatting about it, though!

Hi Madison

Just thinking more on this.

Did anyone attend the NISO Credit Persona workshops<https://aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.niso.org%2Fevents%2Fcredit-persona-workshops&data=05%7C01%7CLesley.Wyborn%40anu.edu.au%7C23cd449fa3a549d7c13508dac0d6829d%7Ce37d725cab5c46249ae5f0533e486437%7C0%7C0%7C638034324808354323%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=gOQZ7oCAYZIU%2FQGo3hloH6heF1BtIifFJDKITHJvMEE%3D&reserved=0> in September? It was at 2.00 am in the morning so I did not make it.

If we restrict ourselves to data, will we be overlapping with what that group is doing?

When we were considering other roles (software, samples, models, etc) we were doing something that no one else that I could find was.

Take care

Lesley

Thanks for the questions, Lesley! As we have been discussing in the group lately, it is challenging to develop blanket guidance/resources for all research artifacts. I would like to start with a focus on data and we can see if what we generate for data can be applied more broadly to other research artifacts. If not, we could tackle another artifact after working on data if people think that would be worthwhile.

I am not planning to do anything formal at the ESIP winter meeting; however, if there will be opportunities for birds of a feather discussions, it would be fun to start chatting about this during the winter meeting.

HI Madison

I am happy to continue.

Can you clarify two things for me:

1. Are you now restricting the new group to be just for data, not research artefacts as we were previously considering (samples, software, etc)

2. Is this group in its new incarnation actually proposing to do something for the ESIP winter meeting?

Take care

Lesley

Subject: [ESIP-ResearchArtifactCitation] ESIP Research Artifact Citation Cluster Update

Hi Fellow Cluster Members,

During our cluster meeting last month, cluster members determined that it might be time for the Research Artifact Citation Cluster to take a break. There are still challenges in the area of credit for research artifacts, but we were not able to come up with a clear direction to move the group. Following that discussion, I attended a Science Gateways Community Institute training that was hosted by ESIP to help cluster leads to develop value propositions and goals for their cluster. As I brainstormed with other cluster leads, I had an idea of a goal/direction that we could potentially head, if others are interested:

Goal: Increase earth science researcher awareness of credit considerations for data

Activity: Create bite-sized pieces of information (think infographics) that cluster members, data managers, librarians, repository managers, etc., could use to engage early career researchers in conversations about credit for data.

If this sounds like something that you would be interested in pursuing with me, please let me know by responding to this email!

If there is enough interest, I would like to meet again in February 2023 to discuss the idea in more detail and formulate a plan. This break will give us some time to focus on activities at the AGU Fall Meeting and ESIP Winter Meeting and come back reinvigorated in the new year. I will try to put together a Doodle poll for anyone who responds to find a common meeting time that will work for the most participants.

In the meantime, let's continue using the listserv to share resources and questions related to citation and credit!

Best,
