Hi BESSIG -
I wanted to highlight two ESIP events that may be of interest to the BESSIG
community at AGU next week: (1) Data Management 101 for the Early Career
Scientist <http://esipfed.org/AGUDataManagement101>, Tues Dec. 4 over
lunch; (2) Ignite at AGU <http://esipfed.org/IgniteAGU2012>, Wed, Dec 6, 6-8
pm, at Infusion Lounge. This will be a great time to see a wide variety of
creative, but substantial talks from people you may not otherwise encounter
in your normal AGU tracks, all in less time than a traditional AGU session.
If you are interested in other ESIP, EarthCube, ESSI sessions, workshops
and side events at AGU, the ESIP community is compiling other AGU sessions
and side events here <http://esipfed.org/AGU2012>. Feel free to add others
you may know of.
Also, the* ESIP Winter Meeting <http://esipfed.org/meetings>*, Jan. 8-10,
2013 may be of interest. The early bird registration rate *ends tomorrow,
Nov. 30*. There are student, 1-day and remote options available. The theme
of this meeting is "ESIP Advancing Earth Science Information: From Climate
Assessment to Intelligence to Action." We have a great line-up of plenary
speakers including Anne Waple, NOAA; Ann Bartuska, USDA; Ghassem Asrar,
WMO, WCRP; and Kit Batten, USAID as well as an interagency panel on
interoperability efforts. There will also be a variety of breakout sessions
and workshops. The draft agenda, hotel and registration information are all
posted on the ESIP site: http://esipfed.org/meetings
Looking forward to seeing many of you in San Francisco.
Best -
Erin
*Data Management 101 for the Early Career Scientist - Tuesday, Dec. 4,
12:20-1:40 PM, Marriott Marquis, Salons 5-6*
Don’t let the changing face of science leave you behind. The proliferation
of data from all sources requires today’s scientists to be knowledgeable
about sound data management practices. In this free workshop, everything
the modern data-producing scientist needs to know about data management
will be introduced. We will discuss the rationale for data management,
provide an overview for managing science data and demonstrate use of two
popular data management planning tools from IEDA and DataOne. This workshop
is open to all AGU attendees. Students and early careers scientists are
especially encouraged to attend. For details on the outline and for links
to all of our Data Management Short Course modules see:

*Ignite at AGU - Wednesday, Dec. 5, 6-8 PM, Infusion Lounge, 124 Ellis St. *
Ignite (www.igniteshow.com), a concept created by O’Reilly Media, provides
presenters a strict presentation format - five minutes and 20 slides that
auto-advance every 15 seconds - to make their point. Enlighten us, but make
it quick! Ignite at AGU, co-sponsored by NASA, ESSI and ESIP, will showcase 12
presenters that span AGU topic areas and session tracks providing the
audience a snapshot of new domain science, IT that supports Earth Science
applications and innovative connections between IT and domain science. The
event will be emceed by Carol Meyer, Executive Director of the Foundation
for Earth Science. For the list of presenters and other event details see:
